Docker to check and notify of loss of ping? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bm_preston · 2023-11-06 17:21 Subject is the best I could come up with. Looking to run a docker that responds (maybe I don’t need a docker) that my iPhone app will consistently ping. Perhaps once per 5 minutes and confirm if my internet is down at my home. Since if my home loses internet it can’t let me know, I want my iPhone to ping my home and see if it drops. To confirm if my iPhone has consistent internet it would also ping perhaps Google and see if A) all good is good B if Google but no home= failure C) if no Google and no home= iPhone connectivity issue. Thoughts? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anotherucfstudent · 2023-11-06 17:28 I use uptime Kuma on a free tier vps in my city for this ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tourist7192 · 2023-11-06 17:29 Tasker can do this. I have it set to ping Google's DNS server and my home server and alert me if one or both go down. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sniff122 · 2023-11-06 17:50 This is exactly what I do, I monitor some more stuff than just my local network services too though ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-06 17:50 > Looking to run a docker that You mean a container image, no such thing as "a docker" :P Uptime Kuma, Smokeping, Statping-ng are common and lightweight tools for this. For simple internet connectivity check i would recommend using Healtchecks.io, it can be selfhosted but for this purpose you can use their free plan and simply set up a cronjob on your server (or wherever) that checks in to their service every X minutes. If a specific amount of checkins are missed, the service notifies you, on your phone for example. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LastTreestar · 2023-11-06 17:52 Pi.Alert ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bm_preston · 2023-11-07 10:22 I appreciate it. I have uptime Kuma, but my iPhone getting the ‘failed to check in’ warning, would mean it needs to be on the same side of the network failure, right? Sounds like Healthcheck.io might be a cloud service that checks on my servers ability to respond, a failure means it hits my mobile internet device. Much appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lanzaroslr · 2023-11-07 10:57 What's the difference btw a docker and a container and a docker? I'm new here, thanks so much for replying ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrmclabber · 2023-11-07 23:23 Docker is the daemon, containers are what it runs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bpreston683 · 2023-11-11 22:30 Do you have a howto for this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnonymusChief · 2023-11-16 04:40 It is recommended to deactivate ICMP, which blocks pings, especially if you have open ports. My rule of thumb is “If I cannot connect, then the internet is likely down” lol. An alternative though, in your case is to run “ping 2.2.2.2 -t”. Just replace the 2.2.2.2 with your public IP address. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bm_preston · 2023-11-19 14:58 I want to be able to see it’s down while out of the house. I can’t tell if I’m not home and it can’t send me the ‘I’m down’ message. <—whatever I use. Pushover, etc.
