Seeking for hardware recommendations reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- schol4stiker · 2023-11-06 15:48 Hello everybody, I'm kindly asking your for hardware recommendations for my future home server. Until now I've used a QNAP TS-451+ (bought 2016) and two Raspberry Pis (2B and 4). QNAP hosting: paperless-ngx, photoprism, (internal) WordPress Raspberry Pi 4: openHAB, Zigbee Gateway based on deconz, Pi-hole, vaultwarden (backup) Raspberry Pi 2B: vaultwarden (prime), deconz, pi-hole, some Node-RED stuff As you can see, it is not a lot. But I never liked hosting computing intensive services (photoprism's face recognition or video transcoding) on the QNAP nor high availability services (openHAB home automation) on the PIs SD card. Thus I thought about adding an Intel NUC 13ANKI7 for more computing relevant services but keep the QNAP as the data center. I still like the QNAP as it does not consume lots of power and still does its job as network storage and performing backups (QSync) to an external USB drive on a weekly base automatically very well. However, yesterday I stumbled upon this thread [QNAP LPC clock issue]( https://www.reddit.com/r/qnap/comments/17odc06/ts451_not_starting_up/) and was quite shocked. It basically says that sooner or later my QNAP NAS might die. Or at least not boot anymore (besides a resistor hack which seems to be a temporary solution). Now my requirements shifted as I want to build a server which replaces the QNAP and is able to host openHAB, PhotoPrism, paperless-ngx and other services in the future. Highly likely that I will use proxmox as a base. If possible I'd like to re-use my 4 x 2 TB HDDs (Western Digital RED, 5.29 TB available, 2.15 TB in use). Some research and a nice article on [lazyadmin.nl](https://lazyadmin.nl/it/home-server-build/) brought me this far: * Mainboard: ASRock H610M-HDV/M.2 * CPU: Intel I3-12100 * CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i-17xx * RAM: Crucial 16GB DDR4 3200 MHz * Power suuply: Corsair RMX Series (2021, RM550x) * OS SSD: Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 250GB NVMe M.2 * Housing: Now idea yet. Thought about some 19" case. **My questions to you** 1) Does this hardware setup in 2023 still make sense with regards to performance vs. power consumption? 2) Does it make sense to keep the WD REDs or would you say using them since 2016 means replacing them? So far I never had issues with them. 3) If 2) turns out I can keep them: Do I assume correctly I would need to wipe the HDDs and build the RAID from scratch on the new server (probably with Unraid?) and copy the data from my external USB drives onto it again? Looking forward to your answers, Oliver ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-06 16:13 /r/HomeServer /r/Homelab ---------------------------------------------------------------------- schol4stiker · 2023-11-06 17:14 Thank you.
