What's the best FOSS Remote Desktop app to host on one of my devices? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Athensz343 · 2023-11-06 02:45 So I am in the process of finishing up building my homelab, I have 9 old desktop minis, with new 1TB SSDs and upgraded 32GB of RAM for all. I also now have two Raspberry Pi 3s. I am looking to use one of the desktops (or Raspberry Pi) to host a Remote Desktop app (or some KVM over IP) and/or a server/homelab centralized management app? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-06 03:03 What's the endgoal? To manage a cluster? Because it sure sounds like with 9 identical devices to build and manage a cluster would be the goal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-06 03:13 I use MeshCentral for all my remote management needs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Athensz343 · 2023-11-06 03:24 Yes, per se. Although I don't know if they will all be one huge cluster. This is my first time building a homelab. I did go a little big on wanting to start with multiple PCs. I am still experiment with OS, right now two of them have Ubuntu Desktop OS, and a third one has Parrotsec OS Architecture Edition, which I installed today. I do want to build an OSINT Lab. I am also right now researching the best security Architecture for my homelab. I tried using one of the desktop as a pfsense router, but it wasn't working for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Athensz343 · 2023-11-06 03:24 Does it so WOL? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-06 03:27 +1 for Meshcentral ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-06 03:28 It doesn't, it's just remote access. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tcfjr · 2023-11-06 03:29 I use RustDesk for this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Athensz343 · 2023-11-06 03:30 I have rustdesk, however i haven't done a self-hosted server, only direct IP. It's been a bit irrirating, because it seems it doesn't save the previous chosen settings. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blaine07 · 2023-11-06 03:49 https://github.com/immense/Remotely ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-06 06:14 With 9 identical devices the most fun and use you can get out of your homelab is either a ESXi or Proxmox cluster. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Athensz343 · 2023-11-06 08:24 3 dell optiplex 7050 mini, 3 HP Prodesk 600 G3, 3 HP Z2 G3 Mini Workstations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-06 08:59 Give Proxmox a go as a cluster. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-11-06 09:32 https://pikvm.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maximus459 · 2023-11-06 12:45 How have you installed it? Right on the host? I tried to install it using docker, and couldn't really get access to SSH devices.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spaceman_Splff · 2023-11-06 12:46 Guacamole might be something for you up check out. I use it as my rdp hub. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-06 13:22 Yeah, direct. But no reason why you shouldn't be able to get SSH access via Docker. /r/meshcentral exists for its tech support. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maximus459 · 2023-11-06 13:30 Thanks, I'll check it out.. I've got a few Linux servers and Cisco devices to access.. Do you have to install a client in whatever pc your accessing meshcentral from? I was happy with guacamole for a while, but recently the recording feature started acting up, and you can't paste into the terminal.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-06 13:39 > Do you have to install a client in whatever pc your accessing meshcentral from? No, it's all via a browser session. Though there is a tool caled MeshCentral Routers which is a single executable used in order to forward connections between your client and ports on target systems (and beyond). It's powerful but not something you need conern yourself with in the first instance tbh. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tcfjr · 2023-11-06 14:00 I used this tutorial to setup a RustDesk ID/Relay server on my Synology NAS using Portainer/Docker: [https://mariushosting.com/how-to-install-rustdesk-on-your-synology- nas/](https://mariushosting.com/how-to-install-rustdesk-on-your- synology-nas/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProbablePenguin · 2023-11-06 14:38 Yes it does. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Athensz343 · 2023-11-06 15:21 I got Raspberry Pi 3s, so I gotta read carefully to see how I can make it work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Athensz343 · 2023-11-06 15:26 I have a Synology NAS DS218, since it's not a " + ", model I can't run Portainer in it. However I do have a Synology RT2600AC Router and it has near-identical GUI to what that guy showed on there. This helps! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Athensz343 · 2023-11-06 15:27 I may possibly do that for the three HP Z2 G3 Mini Workstations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jbarr107 · 2023-11-06 20:46 Check out [Kasm](https://kasmweb.com), a Docker-based environment that, from within your browser, lets you remotely spin up and access various "Workspaces". These can be anything from any of several isolated browsers to Linux-based applications like GIMP and LibreOffice to full Linux Desktop environments of several flavors. But to your query, they recently added Workspaces to manage remote sessions via RDP, SSH, and VNC. And they work with Windows and Linux servers and workstations. I have Kasm installed behind a Cloudflare Tunnel so I don't have to expose ports on my router, and a Cloudflare Application to provide secure authentication. It's really powerful. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Athensz343 · 2023-11-06 20:55 Actually, this is more in line with what I want. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jbarr107 · 2023-11-06 21:24 My homelab runs Proxmox on a Dell 5080 PC, and I have Kasm installed in a Ubuntu LXC Container (though a Ubuntu VM works just as well.) My PC has 16 cores and 32GB of RAM, so I allocated 8 cores and 16GB to Kasm. It's probably overkill, but I really want it to perform well. I have a 250 up x 250 down Internet connection and overall performance is stellar. If you want any tips, let me know. Their subreddit is also r/kasmweb. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Athensz343 · 2023-11-06 21:33 How do you get symmetrical internet like that? Mine is always 300 down × 10 up or something. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jbarr107 · 2023-11-06 21:45 I live in Rural South Carolina, and our telecommunications company must have a government subsidy or something. Fiber to the house. Speeds up to 1GBx1GB, but I'm cheap. ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Athensz343 · 2023-11-06 21:59 Is it Fiber to the premises? I have Cable internet at 300mbps, however they offer 1gbps plans which I plan on getting soon.
