Anyone Open to Crowd Funding a Mint Replacement? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- a2brew · 2023-11-05 21:22 Like many of the 3.6 million Mint users out there, I’ve been trying to process the upcoming ‘shutdown’/Transition to Credit Karma. I haven’t been using it since the beginning, but I have over 13 years of historical data in the tool. Honestly, I didn’t use the budget feature that heavily the last few years, but the fact that only 3 of my 13 years of data is going to transfer to CK…that’s a dealbreaker. Let alone whatever monetization moves Intuit plans for CK. I’ve spent much of the last 2 days investigating many of the SaaS and self-hosted options out there, and while some of them get pretty close, I still can’t help but feel like they’re incomplete replacements. For example, I can’t seem to find any project that incorporates transaction tags in the same way Mint did, and that’s a feature I used heavily. Additionally, the reporting in Mint was more insightful, especially looking at spending Over Time, Category, Tag, Comparisons, Net Income, etc. I’ve been wanting to move my financial data ‘offline’ for a while now, but it was hard to justify considering I was already integrated with Mint & there wasn’t a free self-hosted alternative that got close enough. Firefly is clearly the best so far (and big shoutout to the dev who’s been working on the project for so long), but the UI is a little too complex (deployment was too, imho). Actual is awesome for budgeting, but lacks on the reporting (again, imo). I know coding an open-source project like this is a big task, but considering the closest options are paid SaaS anyway, I’d rather contribute directly to a developer to build an open-source project that effectively mirrors Mint’s functionalities, vs paying for a new platform that’s going to ‘lock me in’ (Monarch, Empower, etc.) Unfortunately, I have zero coding experience so the only way I can help ‘offset’ the effort required is via financial contributions. What would be everyone’s thoughts on something like this? Would anyone else be open to contributing as well? What would be the best way to coordinate something like this? Sidebar for those who never used Mint in the first place: Do you have a database/BI stack or spreadsheet you’ve built that you’d be willing to share a template version of? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fantastic-Schedule92 · 2023-11-05 23:34 I would donate ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CyberHouseChicago · 2023-11-05 23:55 Great idea but will take a ton of $$$ to make a good replacement ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CharkDocolate · 2023-11-06 00:05 I’d be willing to contribute my time. I have some experience integrating with Plaid for a personal budgeting app, using Streamlit for a front end. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- moiz41510 · 2023-11-06 01:54 Bro I’m down to put in the time, and with ChatGPT and a little investment for the API calls, I think we can have a prototype up and running in no time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nexunaut · 2023-11-06 02:05 You should put a discord channel together if you end up running with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EpicMotor · 2023-11-06 03:29 I would donate, I use Firefly for years but would welcome alternatives. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-11-06 18:36 ## Post Removed Hey, a2brew!
