What are people's solutions to work phones and personal phone numbers? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-11-05 11:49 I apologize for not being specifically about being selfhosting but I want to ask here since I don't have other established outlets and it seems of similar mindset. For those who have two phone numbers, being personal and work, how do you manage them both. Do you have two phones, is there an app for that. I know there are dual sim but I don't specifically know how they work practically. Currently, through the goings of life, my setup is one work phone and one personal phone that is my old number but through the app I also have my more active personal Google Voice number. I want to consolidate to one phone but with personal safety and security in mind, so that being personal stays personal and work stays work. As mentioned, I currently do this physicaly with two devices. Selfhosting Backstory: Before the start of my selfhosting journey, I used Google religiously. Drive, Home, Chromecast. I'm trying to De- google-fi a bit as well as keep my data safe and secure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- slowmail · 2023-11-05 12:09 It would depend on what exactly do you need to do on your work phone. Is it just making and receiving calls? Or do you need to check into work emails/schedules/drive/etc? Regardless, the best way to keep "personal stays personal and work stays work", is to use two phones. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elusiveporcupine · 2023-11-05 12:20 I use Android's (LineageOS for microG) built-in work profile with Insular to do the separation. Different SIMs are used for each profile; just have to set the preferred number to use in the individual apps. Each profile can use a different VPN independently and for a more granular control of the network, I use AFWall+ to isolate specific apps from accessing local, mobile, wifi or VPN networks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-11-05 12:32 Thanks for validating my current setup. I'll probably stick with two phones. I just don't like the physical "burden". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kurucu83 · 2023-11-05 12:35 I’m sorry I just have no idea what other phones can do this, but most recent iPhones (mines an 11) allow 1 physical and up to 8 eSIMs, with two enabled at any time. So I have both numbers on the same phone, and the phone has a bunch of built in features to help with that. Primarily, outside of working hours, I can just turn off the work one. But usefully, you can specific a line for calling and texting people, so that you don’t leak between the two. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-11-05 12:51 This might be what I'm looking for! Thanks for the input! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-11-05 12:57 No need to be sorry. You wrote up a ~100+ word comment (I didn't count). I very much appreciate the input. I'll have to look into those features. I have an android but I'll look into similar concepts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Legitimate_Farm_3095 · 2023-11-05 13:01 this literally has nothing to do with the topic of the sub ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DeusCaelum · 2023-11-05 13:33 To bring it slightly back to self-hosting, you could host a voip server. I think 3CX has a mobile app that's pretty usable. Host the work line on that voip server and then connect your personal mobile device using the app. For segregating other data, there are a number of device management/dlp solutions that allow you to segregate business data from personal. Alternatively, there's been an explosion of cloud voip solutions. I've used ring central in Canada, US and the UK with good success. Their plans allow for SMS, Fax, Voicemail, etc in addition to calling. If I ever had a role where I was on call or reachable by customers, this is the solution I would insist on. I absolutely hated being a voip/telephony administrator for the brief time I did it, but it is interesting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-11-05 13:47 Correct. I'm reaching out to my community as mentioned in the post. I don't have many "established" channels. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-11-05 13:48 The mindset is similar. Data protection and security. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- StainedTeabag · 2023-11-05 14:19 I run an iPhone with personal Apple account, personal eSIM, and physical work SIM. Used to carry two phones but now only carry one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-11-05 14:37 Thank you! I'm sorry for posting in self hosting. This is great feedback. I never thought of my own VOIP server! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Das_Rote_Han · 2023-11-05 14:50 I'm not partial to carrying 2 phones but did for many years. When we went to O365 several years ago I ported my work number to Teams. Personal calls are to my phone number, work calls are Teams. We are using Intune for MDM so work apps including Teams are containered off where work doesn't have access to my personal apps and vice versa. A pain sometimes as I can't copy paste between them but could not do that with separate phones either. Still have co-workers that opt for 2 phones. Also have co-workers that have one phone - read no personal phone. If they leave they will have to tell everybody they communicate with their number changed! Or see if work will let them keep the number but with the number of unsolicited vendor calls I get no way would I want to keep my work number. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Legitimate_Farm_3095 · 2023-11-05 14:54 > Data protection and security. this is self hosting, not data protection and security - or in this case how to manage work and personal phone numbers on a device. this is how a subs quality declines. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-11-05 15:02 I appreciate you reading and responding to my posts. I don't post that often and I know I am mucking the waters some. That being said. Reddit is not self hosted. I am more interested in the ideals and goals of the sub than the sub itself. This is what prolongs "our" community. Thanks for your comments. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnApexBread · 2023-11-05 15:12 I have my regular number and a Google voice number. Just download Google voice on your phone and you can get calls there. It's free if in the US. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-11-05 15:22 I don't know that this is an option for me and my situation. I'll definitely look into it. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- codename_fig · 2023-11-05 17:27 I agree with the other comment, the best way to handle work and personal data is to keep it separate, same goes with laptops. It awesome! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-11-05 21:42 Best advice! Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FallenFromTheLadder · 2023-11-06 00:15 The physical burden has been imposed by your job. You can only lower it by not bringing your phone with you when you're not working. it helps you a lot especially if you're going to the office instead of being remote since it sets clear boundaries. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-11-06 02:10 I do that from time to time. I probably do need to set more boundaries, but I manage a service team and have been in their place when there is no one available to reach out to for help. At least that is how I have currently justified it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- junkleon7 · 2023-11-06 02:18 Look into [jmp.chat](https://jmp.chat). You can use it to replace Google Voice. After looking for many years, this solution has worked great for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-11-06 02:34 Thank you so much! I'll definitely be looking into that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- makkudonarudo · 2023-11-06 02:45 Stick with 2 phones if you can. I have a single phone but I wish I would get another phone, maybe next year. By having 2 phones you don't mix work contacts and personal contacts. And you are less likely to post your work stuff on social media by mistake. Also separating work life and personal life is always good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FallenFromTheLadder · 2023-11-06 07:21 >have been in their place when there is no one available to reach out to for help. You should get paid for that. And you're not, I'm sure. Your company is a for profit organization, your bills are not paid by it but by yourself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bufandatl · 2023-11-06 14:42 Two phones. And as soon as I clock out from work I turn the work phone off if I am not on-call. I‘ll never mix work stuff with personal stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-11-06 18:33 ## Post Removed Hey, selfexpression101!
