I love the idea behind UrBackup but it's executed poorly reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BouncyPancake · 2023-11-05 06:37 I've been messing with a few different backup solutions recently and it's been quite an interesting experience. I love the different methods each solution has for how it handles, manages, transports, and restores backups. One backup solution that I cannot get behind though is, UrBackup. I genuinely love the idea of UrBackup and the way it handle some concepts but there has been some very weird and incosistent issues that occur when deploying it in a multi LAN / VLAN environment; or when in environments where there may be very strict security and compliance rules. The idea that the client has to also have a port open on their side and rely on essentially broadcast packets is extremely weird and probably not safe. The fact that I cannot manually input the port and IP of the UrBackup server from the Windows client is also bad; especially when the backup server and the client may or may not be on the same LAN / VLAN. Does anyone have a personal favorite solution they like to use for managing and backing up both Windows and Linux clients? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- autogyrophilia · 2023-11-05 07:33 It is a mess. Do not recommend for anything besides backing up to a local NAS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mogster2K · 2023-11-05 07:38 Veeam can back up Windows clients and should be able to back up Linux, but I haven't been able to get it working. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DarkStar851 · 2023-11-05 14:39 I've been liking Duplicati for handling a few PCs at home, I'm not sure how well it scales out for managing lots of workstations though, never tried using it in a business environment. It's plenty good enough for home use IMO, and has a web UI that runs on each client for managing settings / checking run status, can be secured with user/pass auth. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SpongederpSquarefap · 2023-11-05 15:32 Honestly for file or folder level sync, Syncthing is just too good Yes yes I know it's not a backup tool, but it can do full trash can versioning and file versioning And on your remote system you can still backup your Syncthing folder, so it works really well ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Oolupnka · 2023-11-05 16:06 I like Veeam and Arq ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _EuroTrash_ · 2023-11-05 18:14 >Honestly for file or folder level sync, Syncthing is just too good Absolutely. Albeit on Windows filesystems it just errors out if you try to rename/delete a file while it is syncing it somewhere else, which is a problem eg. with apps that use lockfiles or temporary files like MS Office Besides, it's got no VSS Support and it never will. And no consistent support for sync'ing file creation times. >Failing that, Kopia is absolutely fantastic +1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tangobravoyankee · 2023-11-05 18:20 On the one hand, UrBackup's broadcast autodiscovery voodoo is a hot mess — [`multicast-relay`](https://github.com/scyto/multicast-relay) can solve the VLAN issues and I've even done it across VPN tunnels but sometimes it still doesn't work and I end up having to `tcpdump` traffic and find weird shit like their magic packet is triggering a bug in the NIC/driver than mangles the checksum and I need to disable hardware offload. Probably all of that headache can be avoided by setting up clients as "Internet" clients but tbh, I never tried that. My biggest gripe, and I don't know if it was something peculiar to my setup running the server on Windows, was that it's just bog frickin' slow at backups and restores and that posed a real challenge to keeping my partner's and our kids' laptops current on backups. On the other hand, it's a single-pane-of-glass backup solution with agents that run on pretty much anything. And across years of use it never failed to restore when I needed it. Nothing that is free-of- charge-without-limitations comes close to its features, I have too many things to back up for the free tier of any commercial product, other Open Source products generally can't do a single-step bare-metal Windows restore, and having to use multiple backup products is a hard No from me. That said, someone gifted me an old Synology Plus-series that'll likely be out of support after DSM 7.2 and after a week of messing with Active Backup for Business I decided that feature alone was worth the price of buying a current model. I don't like that it doesn't have an agent for Linux on ARM, only officially supports a couple Linux distros, and can't handle ReFS/BTRFS/ZFS volumes on bare-metal systems, but those are constraints I'm willing to live with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- readit-on-reddit · 2023-11-05 19:02 I like duplicacy. But I don't think you can centrally manage backups. However, you are able to backuo multiple clients to the same destination (in fact, you are encouraged to do so) and you could just manage backups from any client that way. It has deduplication accross multiple hosts so the soace saving are greater than any other backup solution I have found. The only other competitor to it is Kopia but that one has no stable version yet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BouncyPancake · 2023-11-05 21:03 I might look into that. I don't need a GUI technically. I deal with servers without GUIs all the time at this point so. I just need something to copy important directories like stuff in 'etc', 'var' and 'opt' (on Linux) and drives on Windows like 'A' (which are virtual mounted drives but I don't want to backup that virtual drive, it's resource intensive; way better to just backup the data on the drive to a backup server). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fusiondust · 2023-11-06 22:12 I've used it for years and years. Just never have had a problem with it. It's done it's job. It's not the prettiest girl at the dance but you will never be let down. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TinyIntention6424 · 2023-11-10 15:33 I have been using uRBackup for almost 5 years and since last year when they released a new version (that one with house, road and lock icons) that never worked properly. Some clients work well but mostly dont do backups, directories settings are lost without shadow, not reliable at all. Alredy reinstalled and configured each cliente all over again but problems are still present. I am also searching for an alternative for backup image and files thru internet with a central backoffice but cannot find any competent alternative.
