Looking for new server suggestions to run plex, nextcloud and some more projects reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SiliconSentry · 2023-11-04 20:58 I currently run a windows pc 24/7, its a i7 6th gen pc, planning to upgrade to latest. Not much transcoding in plex, nextcloud users are mostly family and friends. I might occasionally play some games. I was considering mac mini m2, but windows is so much flexible and I can add RAM and anything. The only issue I see is the power drawn in running a pc for 24/7 a day, which is not a big deal. Will it cause any issue with pc hardware? will it wear out soon? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NLJPM · 2023-11-04 21:06 https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/list/H8s8KX This is the one I built recently. It's not very cheap but it has everything you need and is easy to update. I installed UnRaid as OS and then with docker all the apps ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SiliconSentry · 2023-11-04 21:12 Thanks, its around $1300 here in US, there is much cheaper one in costco [https://www.costco.com/.product.4000139132.html](https://www.c ostco.com/.product.4000139132.html) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-11-04 21:15 There's no problem running a desktop 24/7. What's missing in your current setup that you feel you need to upgrade? From what you told, it's working well so far. So what gives? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NLJPM · 2023-11-04 21:21 If you are going to host a data intensive service like Plex I would recommend to buy something that can store some HDDs. You are gonna fill up those things in no time ;) I don't know how upgradability is with that dell, but it might be hard. My Nas build has like 8 HDD mounting points in there and enough space for some sata SSDs. At the end of the day when you start adding the drives and upgrading the SSD the dell is probably not that much cheaper anymore. I would recommend self building so you have maximum flexibility now and in the future ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NLJPM · 2023-11-04 21:23 Regardless I definitely recommend using UnRaid as an OS. You can easily manage everything in your web browser on any pc you want, and performance is great, just like idle cpu usage ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-11-06 18:38 ## Post Removed Hey, SiliconSentry!
