How to make pi4 smb share drive automatically show up in windows? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tamashika · 2023-11-04 09:30 I am currently running smb drive on my raspbian. If I want to connect to my smb share drive from windows, I would have to map them using the "Add Network Location" feature in windows. However, I remember maybe a couple years ago when I was using openmediavault, I was able to somehow broadcast the network drive without having to setup that mapping settings in windows (perhaps network discovery was on). What's the magic I have to do? Here is what I have for my `sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf` [Drive] comment = My Share Drive path = /media/hdd public = yes only guest = yes browseable = yes read only = no writeable = yes create mask = 0775 director mask = 0775 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sajberspejs · 2023-11-04 09:38 mDNS? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brandi_Iove · 2023-11-04 10:04 not sure if i understood your question, but i have the same setup and adding the network location in windows(11) just works fine, only had to do it once. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RedditSlayer2020 · 2023-11-04 10:15 You would need a 3rd party software that scans for smb drives on your network to automate it fully. The usual way is to map the drive manually and tic the box automatically connect on startup ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tamashika · 2023-11-04 10:22 I remember omv did it without me installing extra software in Windows 10 tho. I just want to do the same thing as omv does ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tamashika · 2023-11-04 10:25 Yea my setup works, but I want all new computers connecting to my local network able to find the network drive automatically without me setting it up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tamashika · 2023-11-04 10:27 I'll look into it. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JzJad12 · 2023-11-04 11:18 It will automatically show up under 'network' in file Explorer, this is dependent on if the windows machine has network discovery enabled, there has never been any other way in windows. If you want to use it as a drive in software you will most likely have to manually map the drive to a letter, like you mentioned doing already. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RIP_RIF_NEVER_FORGET · 2023-11-04 11:43 Splash page with a redirect that asks them to run a short script to map the drive? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tamashika · 2023-11-04 20:10 Yes I ensured network discovery has been enabled. It's weird because I thought when I was using OMV the network drives pop back to my computer right away without me mapping them in windows. I guess if no one knows how to do it I must have been remembered it wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tamashika · 2023-11-04 20:13 My goal is not to do anything in windows but the network drive will automatically appears (mapped) in the network location section of windows explorer. I'm not familiar with Splash page but it seems like I need to open a webpage in order to see the network drive, which I feel slightly different to what I'm looking for. Thanks tho. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tech2but1 · 2023-11-04 20:44 I think you might be misremembering exactly what you saw/did. If it was being broadcast as a media server on the network then opening My Computer would bring up the media servers it discovered. It wouldn't "map the drives" automatically though.
