Storage recommendation to pair with N100 reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- n00namer · 2023-11-04 08:43 Hey folks, I have just started my journey with media server at home, so I’m bombarding this sub with questions. I bought beelink S12 mini pro recently for media server. So currently looking for a media storage to pair with this minipc. I have been reading a lot about NAS, but considering I’ll get minipc I am not sure I need to invest into expensive NAS? Can you give me some advice/suggestion? I’m planing to run proxmox with few LXC containers, like arr suite + plex, homebridge ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-11-04 09:34 Most people don’t need NAS. However the commodity and utility can pay off. A hard disk in an enclosure attached to your minipc ought to be enough if you are ok losing all your data when, not if, your drive fails. In this case, having a NAS with RAID is useful. You can most definitely have a RAID setup without a NAS, but if you are going to the trouble of setting up a RAID then why not setup a NAS at the same time? I don’t use myself, but check truenas and unraid. You can install those on your own hardware. If I were to start today, I might have gone through this route instead of getting a synology plus another server to pick up where my synology wasn’t powerful enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- n00namer · 2023-11-04 10:07 yeah, I think the only issue with HDD enclosures (DAS) that they exposed as a single device trough USB. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ffimnsr · 2023-11-05 06:26 Try new multi enclosures with USB4 speeds or thunderbolt. With preferably m.2 nvme storage and connect it to mini pc. Mine a simple stack of SSD in raid config ---------------------------------------------------------------------- n00namer · 2023-11-05 08:45 Thanks. any recommendations? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ffimnsr · 2023-11-05 10:37 You can try owc thunderbay if Thunderbolt is supported. Otherwise, maybe some orico brand raid enclosures ---------------------------------------------------------------------- n00namer · 2023-11-05 11:08 I read that RAID is the worse you can get and better just to get own and do software RAID. I was looking into this one: https://amzn.eu/d/5dXy14O ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ffimnsr · 2023-11-05 11:15 It depends. You can manually create a raid setup on your own, the thing with hardware raid you offload the processing on separate chip. Software raids usually have some performance issues. Search on the manufacturer review before doing the setup or buying things ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-11-06 18:56 ## Post Removed Hey, n00namer!
