Looking for ideas for what to self host reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lonlygamerx · 2023-11-04 03:36 Recently, my friend has been giving away his technology items to his friends for personal reasons I won't delve into. I received a mini case with an Arduino Uno and some accessories (seems like a basic Arduino Uno starter kit) as well as a desktop PC from him, which he used for hosting a gaming server with Ubuntu. I already have a server and NAS, so I'm seeking ideas for what to do with this desktop PC, preferably something that can also involve the Arduino. Please avoid suggesting the following ideas, as I either already have a server for them, have tried them, or have personal reasons not to pursue them: NAS/media storage/backup storage, own VPN, proxy, media management (Plex, Jellyfin, etc.), Jackett/Radarr/Sonarr or similar, gaming servers, website hosting, and bitcoin mining. Here are the desktop PC specs (I haven't had the time to fully verify them, but it's based on what my friend mentioned): - AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics - 16GB RAM - AMD Ryzen 5 3500U with Radeon Vega Mobile-Gfx - 512GB SSD Thank you in advance for your ideas ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shadoodled · 2023-11-04 04:30 https://awesome-selfhosted.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-04 04:42 Are you fucking kidding me... The almost same post just hours ago: > What are your thoughts. Which services should I use. Please do share any resources or Foss tools available And another one too lazy to even use the search, let alone look at the sidebar. There is also a big fat sticky ["Please read this first"](https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/bsp01i/ welcome_to_rselfhosted_please_read_this_first/) thread that you ignored. Sorry to be a little harsh about it /u/lonlygamerx but posts like yours become very annoying. And i know some *genius* will reply with "you can just ignore it if you dont like it, duh!" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lonlygamerx · 2023-11-04 05:21 Well ive already looked and i cant find any projects were i can use Arduino with which is why i asked. Good tip instead of being an ass and calling people lazy for not finding things, why not just ignore the post and move on as it not really helping anyone ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bright_Mobile_7400 · 2023-11-04 06:03 I guess people feel the need to be an ass. I never understood why not simply ignoring and moving on. It’s a free public space, who is he to decide that a post is or not allowed based on him finding it annoying ? Not sure but I find this sad. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-11-04 07:49 Sell it and buy more hds ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gioco_chess_al_cess · 2023-11-04 07:57 Right now I am doing the following, maybe it could be inspiring. Arduino connected via USB to a mini PC that polls a sensor for controlled environment monitoring. The mini PC runs: 1. [arduino-exporter ](https://github.com/Clivern/arduino_exporter) 2. Prometheus 3. Grafana I have in this way a robust monitoring solution, with alarms and dashboard. It does not need any Arduino extension. The mini PC would run 24/7 already for other reasons. Eventually, I would also make the dashboard public by a reverse proxy on a webserver VPS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lonlygamerx · 2023-11-04 08:57 Sadly i dont think i would get much for it as my friend had got for around 50$ and at that time it was brand new so i doubt i will get much for it at all ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lonlygamerx · 2023-11-04 08:58 intresting, ty ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-11-04 09:18 Check ebay and local classifieds. Perhaps you can give to another friend or family in need. Or perhaps an offsite backup on a family house? Either way, it seems you don’t have an actual use for it. If you can host all of the stuff you mentioned, you can also host whatever else this would host, so any suggestion here is moot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- soakedcardinal · 2023-11-04 11:37 You can just ignore it bro I am genius ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cakee_ru · 2023-11-04 14:10 after spinning up about 50 services I understood that I don't need most of them. now I have 20 services and hope I could have less. so my advice is to add only what you need to, not just for the sake of adding stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-04 14:28 > why not just ignore the post and move on as it not really helping anyone Thats not how it works tho, and i did help you by linking a bunch of searches for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-04 14:28 > And i know some genius will reply with "you can just ignore it if you dont like it, duh!" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scaredy14 · 2023-11-04 15:11 If you haven't heard of UnRaid, the mini pc could be a good setup to try it out on. UnRaid is a server OS of sorts that has Docker built in and is great
