Self hosting an rss feed, on windows, explained like I'm an idiot? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZookeepergameSoft960 · 2023-11-03 22:31 I'm really new to self hosting and I mostly want to do it in order to self-host an RSS aggregator, like freshrss or ttrss. My only issue is... it all seems like gibberish to me. I've tried my best to make sense of it all but I just don't get it - I've never done anything like this before. Most actually in-depth tutorials I've been able to find have been on Linux, and I'm running Windows, just out of my own convenience. Can anybody help me with just starting out? I'm really interested in doing this but I have no idea where to start at this point and searching for answers has just made me more confused. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-03 23:06 Read the instructions of FreshRSS for example. If something comes up that you dont understand, then research that bit and learn about. Down the rabbithole. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _sashk · 2023-11-03 23:31 If you're using Windows... maybe you just keep RSS reader running 24/7 to pull all your feeds? I'm pretty sure there are windows based RSS readers. Otherwise, look towards setting up Linux VM and running everything there. Not sure if you can WSL to setup service with background jobs, as most of them will require docker, for ease of setup. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Legitimate_Farm_3095 · 2023-11-03 23:37 if you are going to use windows find an app to do it. not something "self hosted". it's probably overkill. my opinion: if you are going to go through the hassle of trying to get freshrss installed (btw just search "freshrss install windows" and i think it was the first link that had a walk through) on windows then at least run it in a linux vm and learn how to do it that way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-04 10:20 Docker Desktop for Windows works well. Personally I would additionally install Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL2) but that's optional. And then you can install something like FreshRSS as a docker container. https://github.com/FreshRSS/FreshRSS/tree/edge/Docker
