In docker, you can have overlapping ports from different containers all day long. I can have 20 containers all on 80/443. But you don't expose 80/443 on the host. You use a reverse proxy, that container exposes 80/443 to the host. The reverse proxy can reach back into each container as long as they share a bridge network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ThereIsAMoment · 2023-11-03 21:43 You can if your applications run in docker containers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mezutelni · 2023-11-03 21:47 You can host two services inside docker container, but you can't expose the same host port for both services. No app downloads, web based plugins, most of clients are web wrappers. I'm happy with it tho, once i managed to setup it up on my tizen tv I hadn't had any problem. For me if you're using it momentanially for some series or something it's fine, if you're using it daily as your main multimedia provider, maybe it's worth it paying plex ---------------------------------------------------------------------- msanangelo · 2023-11-03 22:46 I have both in docker containers looking at the same media. Using kodi as client instead kind of fixed it but I don't like kodi for touchscreens. I have had a few minor issues with Plex but nothing dealbreaking. I wouldn't expect any less from a paid service though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-11-04 11:27 I started with plex and loved it, until I needed a bit more. By more I mean transcoding. I share my library with my family and my best friends, so I can't download content specifically for a TV. Plex couldn't transcode without paying. Also, I didn't like the idea that my content would go through a plex server. I had 2 reasons for self hosting, for whatever I do... 1. It should be free unless it's that good that payi g would be a good idea. 2. It should work if my server works. Unless it's that good or necessary that I need do it. I might have paid for plex, but jellyfin ticks both checks. So I gave it a try. And here I'm after about a year using jellyfin. Everyone is happy to use it. What I mean is, both of them are great. Plex, imo is a little bit easier to setup and make it work properly out of the box. But while I like ui, it has too much unnecessary stuff. Jellyfin should work out of the box too, but needs more config to work properly for transcoding for example. UI is also simpler, but I like it. If that’s the case go Jellyfin. Long answer: I guess you got from most replies that Jellyfin is mostly better than Plex, because it’s open source and also for its server features. I agree with that, yet I’m running only Plex. Plex is better supported by clients and because I share my library with some friends that also share with me. Other than the collective decision to change, there’s at least one “client” I have that doesn’t support Jellyfin: my mother’s TV only supports Plex. If and when she changes her solution I’ll try to find her something that will work with Jellyfin, and then I’ll work on changing my friends’ minds (which I don’t think will be that hard). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SceneAcceptable9176 · 2023-11-04 16:46 Local accounts don’t need online connectivity for authentication. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thesnizzles · 2023-11-04 16:58 I value my time and don't want to play tech support every other day. So instead of using "Ports:" you use "Expose:" to expose those ports on the internal docker network and not to the host computer. Luckily, many docker containers already expose these ports so there is no need to expose any ports directly as long as the reverse proxy is on the same docker network. This does have the downside of not being able to access directly through ip:port anymore but that's likely more secure anyway. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lolappapalol · 2023-11-09 07:44 Things that don't work the same and make it not worth moving from Emby for me (I'm using an Nvidia Shield Pro): 1. Scrubbing - In most all other apps you can scrub to the point you want and then it automatically starts to play. In the Android TV app for Jellyfin, it waits for you to confirm the position. I know it's kinda a stupid reason, but it's incredibly annoying coming from Emby/Plex or any other streaming ui/ux and it essentially not working that way or having the option to change it. 2. Performance - It chugs on some 4k Blu-Ray Rips I have. This might have gotten better since I last tried 6 months ago but... 3. Subtitles - This one is arguably my most important because it forces transcoding if you want to use SSA/ASS subtitles which are used extensively in my household for bilingual chinese/english subtitles. The requirements to not transcode are, to use LibVLC (ok sure whatever) and then also have the subtitles embedded into the file (not realistic for a large library and a bit messy automating it because subtitles don't always line up easily). I LOVE the actual server part of Jellyfin though, it's amazing. It's faster and cleaner than Emby (even though it's essentially the same thing). I enjoy the UI a lot in both the android tv app and the web server UIs. But the above stuff stop me from switching from a working setup.
