Do you guys have your Nextcloud sync ALL of your files to your desktop, or do you let some stuff live ONLY on the server? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lmm7425 · 2023-11-03 17:39 I guess I'm old-school 🤷‍♂️ I currently have about 65GB of personal files (documents, pictures, videos, etc...) synced between Nextcloud and my desktop. However, I'm considering going server-only for 99% of these (e.g., only syncing my password database). I'm just nervous to not have a copy of stuff locally. My goal is to make my desktops and laptops as minimal as possible. I have 3-2-1 backups of the server FYI. What does everyone do? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-03 17:47 I keep them because i got enough storage. But feel free to nuke your files on the Pc's. The only downside i could think of is: A: you dont notice that your nextcloud is half broken and when restoring a backup you would Lose all new files. B: if your Backup gets fucked ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dangernoodle01 · 2023-11-03 18:08 I used to keep them in sync, until a bug (that is still not fixed to this day) deleted some of my files from both sources and caused data- loss. At the time time I thought nextcloud would be my backup, but hey, lesson learned. Nowadays I only use it as a fileshare for already existing and properly backed up media. Not trusting it again. [https://github.com/nextcloud/desktop/issues/4378](https://github.com/ nextcloud/desktop/issues/4378) Basically randomly dying and deleting files (from both sides...) since 2021. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RickRotHut · 2023-11-03 18:14 I leave any folder bigger than 500MB on the server (maybe it's a default setting of the nextcloud client) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lmm7425 · 2023-11-03 18:39 Oof that's rough.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheCudder · 2023-11-04 01:49 Desktop is fully synced. Laptop, tablet and mobile address server/virtual only. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProbablePenguin · 2023-11-04 20:25 Nextcloud hosed my data like 2 (3? can't remember) times over the years until I stopped using it, each time I pulled backups from the day before and got everything working again. As long as you've got solid backups of the data it's just a pain in the ass instead of a major problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-05 04:33 Sounds like a setup error.... Finding nothing online ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProbablePenguin · 2023-11-05 13:18 The date issue was a known bug, it also included a bug in the client app that made it unable to auto-update for extra fun. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-05 15:34 HUH? WHEN? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProbablePenguin · 2023-11-05 17:48 It was about 3-4 years ago IIRC, they fixed the bug quickly but at the time the auto update had a bug too, so I never knew there was a new version until I went and looked. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-05 17:57 Holy shit man, thanks for the information. Nearly had a heart attack when you told me about it. Thank good i have it since 2.5 Years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- szaimen · 2023-11-05 18:02 >Maybe it's more stable now, but their AIO container setup process is a mess I guess you would be happier with this? https://github.com/nextcloud/all-in-one/tree/main/manual-install ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProbablePenguin · 2023-11-05 18:58 Not really, it doesn't sound like it can be reliably auto-update by watchtower, and instead they talk about pulling down new compose files and stuff. Owncloud so far is just a simple 3 container setup and works fine with watchtower. That's how Nextcloud used to be as well, it was much easier to set up then.
