Help me with step 0 in self hosting. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eastern_Box1110 · 2023-11-03 16:24 Google drive 99% annoys. VPN sells my data. Password manager leak my passwords. I think self hosting all these will be better and cheaper. What are your thoughts. Which services should I use. Please do share any resources or Foss tools available ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-03 16:30 And another one too lazy to even use the search, let alone look at the sidebar. Why should they be forced to use their reading comprehension skills? /s ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jusepal · 2023-11-03 16:37 Step 0 is to read the "Read This First!" panel on the sidebar of this sub. 99% relevent info should be there. Alt services should be listed on the awesome-selfhosted, awdsome-sysadmin and awesome-docker-apps list on github. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eastern_Box1110 · 2023-11-03 17:04 No this really helped alot. I understand it beginner posts are annoying but your comment covers everything I need thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eastern_Box1110 · 2023-11-03 17:05 Will checkout thanks!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hdddanbrown · 2023-11-03 17:41 Completely missing the point. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mintfresh22 · 2023-11-03 18:24 Learn to read. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Karlyna · 2023-11-03 19:12 Before you start, you also need to ask yourself the main questions: * are you willing to take time learning, trying, failing (and succeeding at the end hopefully), not only to do it, but how to do it correctly, understanding what is secure, what is not, etc. * are you willing to put money in hardware for this * are you willing to take time to learn this and install everything, teach your house to use it * are you willing to take time (and money) to have proper backup of sensitive information you'll store (passwords, data, others). if this doesn't freak you out, then go ahead, just don't forget that the time you don't spend while using service that does that for you is the money you pay (I get your above points, i don't agree with all of them, but whatever). If you do it yourself, you might want to consider it also. If you have "unlimited" time to do it, it might be cheaper, but if you consider the time as a cost (because it is), then you'll probably pay far more. It just depends where you put your cursor between time and costs :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Simplixt · 2023-11-03 20:49 I'm doing Selfhosting, but I'm still using \- Cloud Storage, as I need Off-Site backups- VPNs, against Geoblocking- Password Manager like Bitwarden Cloud, as I need high availability and secure hosting ---------------------------------------------------------------------- illegalsmolcat · 2023-11-03 21:23 Although I agree thst time is one part of time, you also learn so it's not a waste but an investment. Just paying is a waste. I think it is worth doing if you're OK with the caveats and everything else you said. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Karlyna · 2023-11-03 22:46 >you also learn so it's not a waste but an investment. Just paying is a waste. Totally agree, as long as you are willing to put the effort and time into it. Also, paying is a waste if you feel like you are able to do it properly and if you have time. I personally also ask myself: will my family be able (or willing) to keep using it / maintaining it / whatever / ... if something happens to me in the worst case (I wish not :D). If no, what is the best in- between solution then. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- illegalsmolcat · 2023-11-03 23:56 I am 100% certain nobody in my family can handle this task. Haha. I'm still explaining to them how to change wifi password over the router page, haha. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eastern_Box1110 · 2023-11-04 02:13 Thanks for advice. This is something I used to enjoy watching and didn't had money or hardware. I recently got my first job which I hate so much so I have to do something I love in my free time. I was thinking of first starting with cloud hosting and slowly move to buying some good hardware. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sajberspejs · 2023-11-04 04:07 I wouldn't do it if it wasn't a hobby. I love the privacy, but it can take a lot of time and cost some money. If you like it there is a lot to learn. I've learned a lot about domains, DNS, SSL, proxy, networking, docker, zfs, Linux. I could probably take a job as a sysadmin. I run TrueNAS Scale and two free VPSes at Oracle. Lawrence Systems have really good NAS tutorials on YouTube. For passwords I do KeePass and regular cloud storage. I want to be able to access them from anywhere even if I've lost my phone with the VPN etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eastern_Box1110 · 2023-11-04 05:23 Yes it's more about hobby but wait.. oracle has a free vps?? That amazing ---------------------------------------------------------------------- austozi · 2023-11-04 08:35 > Google drive 99% annoys. Nextcloud. Many users here complain of sluggishness. For me it's working wonderfully. Seafile, Rclone, Filebrowser and Syncthing are alternatives that work somewhat differently. > VPN sells my data. Wireguard. > Password manager leak my passwords. Vaultwarden. Feature-compatible with Bitwarden and uses official Bitwarden clients. Links to these and many more are at https://github.com/awesome- selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted > I think self hosting all these will be better and cheaper. What are your thoughts. Selfhosting may not get rid of the annoyances and stop your passwords from leaking. It mainly shifts the control and thus the responsibility from third-party providers to yourself. You need to prepare to deal with these as a selfhoster. There are different costs involved (time, hardware, electricity). Do your research. Do not embark on this journey with false hopes and unrealistic expectations. All the best! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- austozi · 2023-11-04 09:19 Also not on point, u/hdddanbrown are you by any chance a BookStack user, or just a slower version of u/ssddanbrown? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sajberspejs · 2023-11-04 09:22 Yes, have been free for a couple of years. It's amazing actually. Oracle Free Tier. I think it's 1/2 cpu cores, 1gb ram, 50gb disk and 10tb bandwidth, and you can have 2 of those for free! I run 2 nebula lighthouses in two different fault domains which should keep them from going down at the same time unless Oracle has a very big problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sajberspejs · 2023-11-04 09:28 And since you're new, Cloudflare is the best domain DNS service out there, and you also buy domains cheap there. If you use 1.1.1.1 as the DNS for your devices, the changes you do to your domains dns, like setting a records will work for you instantly instead of taking a while. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-11-04 11:01 The other way round is the correct way: if you get a cloud server, you have a Porsche on the autobahn. This server is directly connected to the internet with a 1Gig connection up and down (most of the time), it can and will be attacked directly, instantly after creation, permanently and from the whole world. So if you don’t know what you are doing, this server will not be yours for long. Getting a raspberry pi for your home or using a virtual machine on your main computer is the better approach to learn Linux and many techniques you need for self hosting: you are „safe“(er) behind your internet provider‘s NAT and can also setup some services which are only reachable on your lan or via a self hosted VPN. I would suggest Tailscale for this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eastern_Box1110 · 2023-11-04 13:07 Interesting 🤔. I will do my research. I have been dying to get a raspberry Pi for years but its not available easily in my country. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-11-04 13:18 More flexible and more powerful, but also more expensive are MiniPCs like an Intel NUC or a Minisforum. It is no bad idea to directly start with that, as you might outgrow a raspi quickly. Another option: small form factor (SFF) office PCs from eBay. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hdddanbrown · 2023-11-06 08:54 Maybe both?
