SSH SOCKS Proxy - a guide to fast and easy SSH tunnel setup on any OS reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CoinsHost · 2023-11-03 09:36 VPNs are popular for online security, but proxies can offer a more lightweight way to change your online location without the overhead of a full VPN. The guide breaks down how to [set up an SSH SOCKS proxy](https://swissmade.host/en/blog/ultimate-guide-to-ssh-socks- proxy-setup-secure-browsing-on-windows-macos-and-linux) for secure browsing across Windows, macOS, and Linux. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrmclabber · 2023-11-03 11:50 A socks proxy is problematic for security because unless you *specifically* tell your app to use it, it's not going to use it. Many apps don't even support socks proxies. I'm not sure what is meant by "more lightweight" I wouldn't call wireguard a "heavy" application. And you have the benefit of ALL traffic going across the connection with leakage prevented. It's a tool to keep in the toolbelt for sure, but a VPN just makes more sense in the vast majority of cases. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-03 12:11 Wireguard > basically anything else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MrZeugma · 2023-11-03 14:22 I use dante server since a few years, and it rocks ! [https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-set-up-dante- proxy-on- ubuntu-20-04](https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to- set-up-dante-proxy-on-ubuntu-20-04) I have both VPN and SOCKS Proxy, sometimes you just want to proxify your browser traffic, but not the others software, like video games, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Simplixt · 2023-11-03 21:05 I'm using [https://hub.docker.com/r/serjs/go- socks5-proxy/](https://hub.docker.com/r/serjs/go-socks5-proxy/) together with Wireguard. It's great to generate SOCKS5-proxies fast that you can use e.g. for Firefox Containers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-11-03 21:53 Depends on use case. I use the SSH socks proxy all the time for bypassing geoblocks and for testing things from remote locations. In those cases all I want is one browser to use the proxy.
