Sync software to sync two NAS recommendations? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sevynz13 · 2023-11-03 06:33 I have a server running Windows. It has two samba shares mounted to it. I need a software that can sync from share1 to share2. I thought Syncthing was going to work but it can only sync between two machines, not sync two folders on the same machine (as far as I can tell). I'm really bummed because it looked like awesome software but it won't work for my purposes. File versioning is preferable but not a deal breaker. Any other recommendations? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- timothyclaypole · 2023-11-03 06:44 The ideal way to solve this problem is probably by doing the synchronisation locally on whatever systems the two samba shares are provided from but if you don’t have access to those systems then you can’t do that. When you say sync is this bidirectional? If share A has a file change and so does Server B which one “wins” should it be the most recent change or is one share more authoritative? You can use something as basic as Rsync but it can get really complicated if you have bidirectional sync needs, particularly around deleted files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sevynz13 · 2023-11-03 07:05 I need bidirectional and one-way. Yes locally is out the question. Share 2 is a remote samba share accessed via OpenVPN. I just came across FreeFileSync. I have used Goodsync before but I'm not paying a sub for it and FreeFileSync looks very similar. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-03 07:13 robocopy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate-Fig-805 · 2023-11-03 07:16 I am using syncovery to sync remote to remote shares. It's not free though, but very satisfied with what it does. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-11-03 10:05 I use [SyncBack](https://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/sbfree- new.html) to do something kinda-sorta-not-really like this. Only ever used it for manual syncing but I'd be surprised if it doesn't have scheduling or something in its myriad of config options ---------------------------------------------------------------------- majamale · 2023-11-03 10:05 I have used FreeFileSync for this purpose and works ok, very customizable and fast, but when doing bidirectional sync I always review it first, specially if operating systems are different or if you want to apply some criteria on which file to keep other than modification time, etc. Years ago I used Goodsync and for a basic use case as mine it is not better than FreeFileSync. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bklyngaucho · 2023-11-03 11:20 Yup. For windows this is all you need
