Self hosted chat exist? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Beautiful-Log5632 · 2023-11-03 03:20 Does self hosted chat exist? It would be like forum software with message threads and file uploads but for 1 on 1. You can create accounts for different people for example 10 different people that would have their own 1 on 1 chat only with you in own private room or message board. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- revereddesecration · 2023-11-03 03:47 Plenty of options, Google “self hosted chat software” ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate-Fig-805 · 2023-11-03 04:08 A lot to choose from nowadays, e.g: 1. Matrix synapse & element web/desktop/mobile 2. Rocketchat 3. XMPP/Jabber ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fresh_Feesh · 2023-11-03 04:18 Zulip (threads by default) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JaJe92 · 2023-11-03 06:51 I really like Element, too bad self-hosting it's not free. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bufandatl · 2023-11-03 08:20 Mattermost ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate-Fig-805 · 2023-11-03 08:33 matrix synapse is free ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cltrmx · 2023-11-03 08:33 Selfhosting Element is in fact free. I‘m doing it both at home and at work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-03 09:00 Both Synapse and Element are free to selfhost. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ReinoutWolter · 2023-11-03 09:17 Scramble ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheFlyingBaboon1 · 2023-11-03 10:07 Nextcloud talk ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UnseemlyCorgi · 2023-11-03 10:55 Mattermost ---------------------------------------------------------------------- junialter · 2023-11-03 11:44 Rocket.Chat is crap ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mcc0unt · 2023-11-03 11:52 If you own a Synology NAS you can run a chat server on it. Alternatively you use Mattermost. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mtetrode · 2023-11-03 12:56 For XMPP you have Prosody and Openfire. I'd recommend Prosody when you have a small user base and Openfire when it becomes large. Prosody runs without a database, Openfire requires an SQL database and can be clustered. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate-Fig-805 · 2023-11-03 13:06 We used openfire as xmpp server and spark as client in my previous company. Accounts are stored in LDAP which is the same accounts we used in the email system. That was around 10 years ago... I wonder how is openfire now, i remember a lot of plugins were available then which makes the project really useful in a closed environment. Openfire was the defacto xmpp server then. Nowadays, we are using Matrix. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mtetrode · 2023-11-03 15:21 What is the advantage of Matrix? Openfire is doing good, developers are very approachable, many plugins, developing your own plugin is easy when you know java. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate-Fig-805 · 2023-11-04 00:01 I can't compare it to openfire nowadays as it's been maybe around 10 years the last time I touched openfire. That's a testament too how stable and good the project is. Matrix offers moderation between different domains/subdomains, audio and video rooms, integration to FB, telegram, IRC, etc. Also, there are a lot of useful bots that can be easily integrated to each eco system. E.g. During the pandemic and everyone is working at home, we used a matrix bot that handles the remote employee's timekeeping records. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-11-04 11:14 Mattermost. Not RocketChat, as its limitations for push notifications is severely limiting very quickly. Mattermost lets you use their push notifications server unlimited.
