Email server except MailCow reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Bar_70 · 2023-11-03 00:03 I like MailCow but hungry for the resoures What email-server project can be installed on a non-empty VPS? MIAB and a few others are recommended to be installed on a new VPS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kzs · 2023-11-03 00:16 Out of the new solutions that popped up recently, I really like [mox](https://github.com/mjl-/mox) I run it with docker compose. This of course only, if you don't need webmail, or are willing to set it up separately Other new solutions: - [maddy](https://maddy.email/) - and the newest kid, [stalwart-mail](https://stalw.art/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-03 00:18 The default packages that get used my mailcow? Postfix, dovecot etc. But your Mailcow is Ressource hungry? Mine is running with 6 gb ram and 4 Cores for 14 Domains. Have you seen Microsoft exchange? 256 gb mem is the min requirement iirc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- apparissus · 2023-11-03 00:33 I recently implemented stalwart, and modulo the fact that email just suuuuucks, it's been fine. Running in a Debian 12 LXC that's currently using ~120MB RAM of the 512 I gave it and virtually no CPU. The docs could still use a bit of refinement, at least for the somewhat nonstandard stuff I was trying to configure it for, but they're decent. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate-Fig-805 · 2023-11-03 00:50 @OP, Just curious, are you using SoGo and activesync (EAS) in mailcow? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-11-03 00:53 For me its even with SoGo so small i can not really tell it is there. Dont have EAS on tho ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate-Fig-805 · 2023-11-03 01:59 in my experience, sogod sometimes has a nasty reputation of eating resource even with just 2-4 devices with large mailbox and eas enabled. that's the 1st culprit that i will look into. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dhuscha · 2023-11-03 02:18 I mean if you want bare bones, postfix and dovecot are pretty minimal. I just got done getting my set Up working with puppet manifests. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kurucu83 · 2023-11-03 05:24 I used MAIB for ages, on a few small VPSs. Loved it. Worked very well, all core features, nothing you can mod so nothing to break. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- falcorns_balls · 2023-11-03 05:51 Throwing out an oddball here. I know you can run a virtual synologyOS. synology has a nice mail server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bz386 · 2023-11-03 09:07 mailu.io is good. Just make sure you don’t enable the antivirus container, as that is memory hungry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Bar_70 · 2023-11-03 10:33 > and the newest kid, stalwart-mail I haven't found any link to github. It's not open source? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Bar_70 · 2023-11-03 10:42 no ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Bar_70 · 2023-11-03 10:43 it's disabled ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kzs · 2023-11-03 13:11 yes, Mox has account / domain management over the web On github you find some hints about this topic under "How do I change my password?" What I didn't mention, they even have a webmail... You can find screenshots for both webmail and account / admin pages at [this link](https://www.xmox.nl/screenshots/) I'm not involved in the project, other than trying and using it (and asking some beginner level questions) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MothGirlMusic · 2023-11-03 14:23 We use mailu with OIDC so instead of users being controlled by LDAP it's password less and so far it's amazing ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Bar_70 · 2023-11-03 18:00 Ok. Mailu isn't low on resources, is it? 1Gb. It's only slightly lower than MailCow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Bar_70 · 2023-11-03 18:03 It appears to be a nice option of MailCow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skmcgowan77 · 2023-11-03 21:03 VirtualMin (VirtualMin.com) is still one I recommend. Actively still developed, multi-reseller, multi-tenant version of webmin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rrrmmmrrrmmm · 2023-11-06 09:25 I was recommending docker-mailserver in earlier days because it was pretty good. But nowadays I'd just agree with the others to go for stalwart mailserver. There's also a Subreddit at /r/stalwartlabs It's like a best-of features and protocols. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rrrmmmrrrmmm · 2023-11-06 09:26 Maybe you could give some feedback to /u/StalwartLabs / /u/Bassfaceapollo regarding the docs? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bassfaceapollo · 2023-11-06 09:51 I am just a mod that helps out w/ the sub sometimes. u/StalwartLabs is the correct point of contact. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Bar_70 · 2023-11-09 17:41 I haven't tried it yet. However, I already have mox and I've liked it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MothGirlMusic · 2023-11-24 00:50 I've had great success running it with 2gb of ram and 2 cores on my proxmox lxc, with a proxmox mail server smarthost as well in another lxc. Our set up doesn't use a lot of resources at all and mailu has a super simple not many options gui that's like straight to the point with all the functionality you need with zero BS plus roundcube as a web client. I've not tried mailcow so I can't compair but it was easy to set up and we have it on docker inside an lxc and it runs just fine ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Bar_70 · 2023-11-24 17:02 I also have had great success running MailCow on 128Gb of ram. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MothGirlMusic · 2023-11-24 17:19 I don't understand your reply here. 2gbs and only 2 allocated cores for mailu is pretty small and efficient for an LXC. I figured that's what you were looking for. Despite this small package, it runs the mail server for the entirety of our staff. If you even have a computer from early 2000s it'll run on basic hardware. No quantum computing needed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Bar_70 · 2023-11-26 21:31 > 2gbs and only 2 allocated cores for mailu is pretty small and efficient for an LXC. it's not Mailu who asked the question but me. Therefore, the fact that they're small for Mailu is irrelevant ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mqu31 · 2023-12-20 17:36 my dockerized mail server, based on Stalwart-mail is using 22Mo of memory, servicing SMTP, IMAP, JMAP, POP3. `stalwart-mail-server_app_1 3a5576bc34d1 0% 22M / 250M 9M / 1M 0B / 0B 7 72h43m31s`
