Is this Mini PC a smart choice? Chuwi LarkBox X vs Rip reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dantnad · 2023-11-02 23:30 I currently own a 2GB model of a Raspberry Pi 4B which works good but I have a few lot containers running on it and now I'm kind of reaching its memory limits so I was thinking into getting a Raspberry Pi 4B with 8GB but for the price I can get a Chuwi LarkBox X with 12GB RAM and 512SSD (I loved because it has 2 eth interfaces which I believe could be used for my network bridging(?) My use case is basically running docker containers with a few things like my website, automation tools like Activepieces, Homebridge and HomeAssistant, a Remote Desktop server with Rustdesk, I also have Portainer running and Adguard Home, a Time Machine server with SMB and a DDNS for Cloudflare. (No wonder why my RPI is kind of overwhelmed). I'm also thinking of making a small media server and a DCHP server and router for my home studio. I know the processor architecture is different with the Chuwi being x86 instead of ARM, but wondering if this is a good option for this use-cases or if it's overkill and wether I could use the Chuwi for this (installing Ubuntu server instead of windows) Still kind of a newbie on this and kind of addicted to running Docker Containers so I still don't know the best option for this kind of home servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- noseshimself · 2023-11-03 00:17 The Chuwis I had were too easy to brick changing firmware settings. The support is abysmal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dantnad · 2023-11-03 00:49 So it isn't very wise to try to change Windows for Ubuntu Server? ;-; ---------------------------------------------------------------------- noseshimself · 2023-11-03 01:10 If you want not too expensive but very stable hardware, look somewhere else. I'm using Fujitsu thin clients (N4105 based) with 16GB RAM and M.2 (RAID-1) as required and as beefier system a Minisforum HM90S with 5 M.2 (thanks to Stardom) and 64GB RAM. This is all I expect to need for the next few years. We're talking about 10W for the Fujitsus... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tehnomad · 2023-11-03 08:31 I have the Chuwi Larkbox X and it works great. Running Proxmox on it with Docker in an LXC. The only downside to it is that the RAM is soldered and can't be upgraded. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fluffer_Wuffer · 2023-11-03 20:17 I've been on the lookout for a mini PC,.and Chuwi kept coming up.. they seem decent, but the boxes I came had the RAM soldered on, so you can't upgrade them.. This is a big issue, and it artificially limits the box, just for the sake of saving a couple of dollars on having a SODIMM slot added.to the board. In the end, I ordered a Firebat AK2 Plus with N100, from AliExpress, with 5-day delivery for about £95... th3 cheapest UK stocks I found are > £150+ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-11-06 18:41 ## Post Removed Hey, Dantnad!
