If your focus is managing communication channels, like phone / mail /
social media and helpdesk functionality, zammad is working ok for me.

EspoCRM is the best platform I can recommend. It is [open-
source](https://github.com/espocrm) and completely free for self-
hosting. The system has great tools for managing contacts, leads,
accounts and opportunities. It can be also used to track customer
cases and documents, send mass emails, manage email communication with
clients and create templates to send auto-replies for common emails.
