Any way to use host/separate mouse and keyboard when remoting into server? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mtx0 · 2023-11-02 17:14 Maybe a weird question, but I currently remote into my two servers instead of connecting them to their own monitor and that works great, however I'd like to use a separate mouse/keyboard than the one I use for my personal computer to control them. Is this possible? Both servers use windows 10 pro (using RDP to remote in) and my personal pc is on windows 11 home. I have one of the servers remoted into basically all day on my personal pc's second monitor, but I don't want to plug it directly into this monitor, as I don't always need it up, and would rather use that real estate for other things during work hours without hitting hard butons when I can just minimize it. Im open to using other remote clients if necessary but would prefer to stay with RDP as it works flawlessly so far. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gibs679 · 2023-11-02 17:35 Probably a dumb idea but set up a VM on virtual box and pass a usb port to it to use the mouse/keyboard you want. Then just full screen when you want to use it and minimize the VM and go back to the other mouse when you're done. That technically solves the problem but I don't see how that would be easier than just minimizing RDP and using the same M/K? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- New_d_pics · 2023-11-02 18:23 So you're looking for multi-seat software, start your search there. I went down this road a couple years ago on a broadcast/streaming setup. Forget what I used then but I recently came across [DuoStream (git)](https://github.com/DuoStream/Duo) and have it on my list to look into further. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mtx0 · 2023-11-02 19:01 Ill look into that, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tech2but1 · 2023-11-02 22:00 I can't see what you're going to achieve here by doing this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AstrologicalMob · 2023-11-02 22:11 Something to potentially look into could be something like luaMacros. The flight simm community use it to split and handle the input of several keyboard/mice so you may be able to have it hook onto a second set of peripherals and then bind them to a specific application. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- regypt · 2023-11-07 22:36 maybe not quite what you're looking for, but since you mentioned not wanting to have to hit hard buttons, I'm guessing you're talking about the switcher on a kvm? Some of them will switch with a hotkey, like pressing scroll lock twice. Possibly food for thought.
