3d printing stl/gcode library for multiple purposes... unsure which tool? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BloodyIron · 2023-11-02 16:20 I picked up my first 3d printer ~Dec 2022 and I've been going ham with it. I have octoprint running in a docker container, running on an old Dell Optiplex, connected via USB-C to the printer. I have Cura connected to that octoprint instance for uploading gcode and such. But I'm also keeping stl files I care about on my local computer. I also want to get into making my own 3d files (stl probably). My local stl file management is okay but I want to do better. I want a single location that I self-host that I can keep all my stl, gcode, and other printer files in. Such that Cura, Octoprint (this and others in the future), and whatever my to-be-decided CAD software is, can all connect to the central location and interface with it. And a web interface for my filthy human face really would be nice too. I'm just unsure which tool really fits the bill here. I could maybe use my nextCloud instance, I'm just unsure if that gives me everything I want (maybe it does). Or maybe there's another tool. Generally I want everything I care about to be not on my desktop computer, and on my infrastructure. So I have backups, resiliency, etc. And Octo print being able to pull files from them is important too, so I don't need to worry about "where" the file is once it's ready for printing. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? This is all with "private" intent, so to say, not trying to replace thingiverse or anything like that. I just don't see this getting "simpler" with how I've been doing it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- darkshadow10120 · 2023-11-02 19:02 [VanDAM](https://github.com/Floppy/van_dam) might work for you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BloodyIron · 2023-11-03 00:04 I can't yet tell how the various "things" would interface with it though. I saw it and was on the fence with initial impression. Any specific advice on how this works in-practice? Like if you've used it I'd love to hear your experience and how you use it, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- morbidpete84 · 2023-11-03 00:26 Didn’t know I needed this but I do. File names with layer heights, quantity and material is getting annoying in each printers folder 😂 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- root_switch · 2023-11-03 05:57 Why not just a simple network share? That way you can access your files from any computer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-03 08:44 I would put them in a git repository, install Gitea, learn the basics of git, done. If STL are binary files, maybe use it in conjunction with git-annex. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BloodyIron · 2023-11-03 14:43 Well that might be an option but I am hoping for a web interface to help keep things organised. A SMB network share doesn't have the same conveniences one might see in a web interface for such things. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BloodyIron · 2023-11-03 14:43 Can Cura and CAD software connect to git repos to read contents and such? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-03 15:01 Any software can access git repos If you mount them i.e. via fuse. https://github.com/presslabs/gitfs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-03 15:01 Any software can access git repos If you mount them i.e. via fuse. https://github.com/presslabs/gitfs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-03 15:07 But if you don't need any version management, you could just use a WebDAV or SMB volume. Or use your Nextcloud, there are plugins to preview STL and other 3d formats. https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/files_3dmodelviewer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BloodyIron · 2023-11-03 17:12 So the implied answer is no then? Because your response does not explicitly answer my actual question. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BloodyIron · 2023-11-03 17:13 I'm asking about native capability in the application, not yet- another-way I can go looking for a "file on disk". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-03 17:15 Maybe that's something you should research? I just suggested git as a potential storage backend since it has a very good versioning mechanisms. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BloodyIron · 2023-11-03 17:18 You read my original post and somehow got the impression I was not doing research? And that this discussion is not in and of itself part of that research? And then when I ask you about a method you suggest, you instead talk about something else. Look, if you don't have answers, that's fine. But I've been completely clear this whole time, and yes I am aware of why people like git, but that means nothing to me if the way I want to use it (in this case) doesn't work. Namely if all the tools relevant (Cura, CADwhatever, Octoprint) cannot interface with it natively. Which is an aspect I spelled out in the original post. So like, I appreciate you and others helping, but telling me to go and do research as a response? Are you for real? Come on... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-03 17:18 Since you seem to know better I wonder why you are asking in the first place. Good luck man. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-03 17:19 Whatever dude. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BloodyIron · 2023-11-03 20:47 I never said I know better and you're really not picking up what I'm putting down here... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BloodyIron · 2023-11-03 20:49 Indeed.
