Best Media Server to use? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Awesomeguys90000 · 2023-11-02 10:46 Hello, I am currently running a media server using Serviio. While it has been great so far, I've run into a limitation with DLNA transcoding options. Specifically, I cannot transcode to MPEG-4. While most devices support MPEG-2 transcoding, the client device in particular (a PSTV) only supports videos using the MPEG-4 standard. Therefore, I am looking to find a media server client that I can run that supports transcoding to this over DLNA, among other things. Here is the manual that says what is supported: https://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/pstv/videos/filetypes.html If I can keep using serviio I will, but whatever my outcome is, it must support MPEG-4 transcoding OR convert any videos that goes into the server to MPEG-4 so they work properly (that would probably be a better option since it would reduce latency and buffering and CPU power when streaming, if someone can tell me how I can do this on a Raspberry Pi please let me know) Thanks in advance :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-02 11:01 Plex with hardware transcoding in a QuickSync Intel CPU or dedicated GPU. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Awesomeguys90000 · 2023-11-02 11:31 No I mean like software lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lexutzu · 2023-11-02 11:33 Plex is the software, he recommended hardware to go along with the software. I also recommend Plex, been using it for a few years with no issues. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Awesomeguys90000 · 2023-11-02 11:39 I've had major issues using transcoding with Plex, especially over DLNA which is a must. Maybe I should have specified I need good DLNA support, I don't need anything else to access it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-02 11:47 DLNA in 2023? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-02 11:48 > Therefore, I am looking to find a media server client that I can run that supports transcoding to this over DLNA, among other things. Good luck with that, you wont find much, if any. DLNA is not meant to be any transcoding etc. Its a very basic simple technique. There are very few softwares that can transcode on the serverside, and then send it over DLNA. But you mention your server is a Raspi, so please dont get your hopes up at all to do any video transcoding on that, it just doesnt handle it. Those people that use a Raspi as mediaserver (with Plex, Jellyfin, or over basic DLNA) make sure that their media matches their clients capabilities, and as a result no transcoding is required, then even a Raspi3 can handle it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-11-02 12:11 What’s the problem? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-02 12:21 Using a 20 year old technology on a 10 year old device? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-02 12:43 Plex is a software. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChesterDood · 2023-11-02 13:00 Why is DLNA a must? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TerryMathews · 2023-11-02 13:06 What is your target device that you need DNLA? Plex has clients for about every TVos platform on the planet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-11-02 13:35 H264 is almost 20 years old and is still widely used. I don’t see your point. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Awesomeguys90000 · 2023-11-02 13:39 PSTV ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Awesomeguys90000 · 2023-11-02 13:39 Because the clients only support dlna ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChesterDood · 2023-11-02 13:41 What clients are you using? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Awesomeguys90000 · 2023-11-02 13:41 I'm happy to migrate to more powerful hardware if need be, transcoding I know doesn't work great on the pi already. But, I need some software to do it to that specific codec, and I am struggling to find that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Awesomeguys90000 · 2023-11-02 13:42 PSTV (as per the link in the post) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TerryMathews · 2023-11-02 13:44 A quick Google search leads me to believe that the recommended way to use Plex with a Vita, PSTV or PS4 is through the web version. You might check it out. It's going to be difficult to find a DNLA server that does what you want, in part due to the fact that DNLA was never designed to hold this amount of diverse content. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChesterDood · 2023-11-02 13:47 Check out these plex related links that talk about setting up a DLNA profile in plex for these units https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/s/v8zq4NMiRu https://forums.plex.tv/t/writing-profiles-for-dlna-devices/38060 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-02 14:15 Sure but H264 became very widely adopted and by today, tons of devices and software support. Even tho a lot of TVs had and still have support for DLNA, its rarely used. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-02 15:49 Then do as /u/ElevenNotes recommended, get yourself something like a NUC or Thinclient/MiniPC, basically anything with at very least 6th Gen Intel CPU with iGPU, better 8th Gen+. Then use QuickSync for hardware-transcoding, for free with Jellyfin, with Plex a subscription is required. And i would highly recommend you throw that PSTV out and simply buy a $30 FireTV stick or similar, it will play things A LOT better. Good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skc5 · 2023-11-02 16:20 Stop using DLNA. Disable it entirely as it is usually very insecure. Setup hardware transcoding with Plex or Jellyfin (recommended) and then transcode all of your media to a format that PSTV supports. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Awesomeguys90000 · 2023-11-02 22:19 what if I only want to use DLNA over my home network to access my media? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skc5 · 2023-11-02 23:15 Why? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fuken33 · 2023-11-02 23:33 Jellyfin. It can do all that. It is easy to setup. It has no bloat. Probably what you want ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Awesomeguys90000 · 2023-11-03 10:20 does it matter? either way, I want to use my server with a PS Vita and PS3, and while there is a Plex client for PS3, I would rather use DLNA since it has much better integration with the systems, and allows me to directly download the data to those systems (which is very useful for the PS Vita since it means I can access my content on the go without internet). I am not port forwarding DLNA either, so unless something on my local network is infected, DLNA shouldn't pose a security risk (and even then, I am using it to connect devices together without malware, the PS3 and PS Vita... I'm not really using anything else to connect, and if I am I use other means for the time being lol) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skc5 · 2023-11-03 13:44 DLNA doesn’t need port fortwarding, it leverages upnp to automatically open ports on your systems and router, as well as making all of your media available without authentication. Maybe you can see how that would be bad. Anyhow, both Plex and Jellyfin feature DLNA servers which will work for your PS3. Transcode your media to the format the PS3 supports (mpeg-4 h.264) and you’ll be good to go. DLNA is a network discovery technology, it is not a media format (like mpeg-4). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- billgarmsarmy · 2023-11-04 03:11 Chromecast with Google tv is $20 rn....
