Mail backup reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Impossible-North-400 · 2023-11-02 06:18 Good morning, I'm looking for a solution to keep a local and searchable backup o 3 email accounts, including received and sent messages. Is there any docker service that may do the work? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- itsupport_engineer · 2023-11-02 06:30 If you have a QNAP you can use qMailAgent. Otherwise use any docker email service you can find ( i do not like docker so cannot recommend any ) then imapsync \[ [https://imapsync.lamiral.info/](https://imapsync.lamiral.info/) \]and cron to sync between servers as often as you want. I use this with Zextras Carbonio \[ [https://zextras.com/carbonio](https://zextras.com/carbonio) \] on Proxmox daily and it works very well for my needs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Impossible-North-400 · 2023-11-02 06:31 I have available proxmox server with possibility of plain VMs and Dockers. Thanks for the answers, I will check them out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- itsupport_engineer · 2023-11-02 06:37 In that case a nice VM with Carbonio would be easy. Just run the open source edition and make sure to give enough disk space for growth. IMAPsync can then be installed on the same VM and will ne nice and quick. If you do choose this solution and have issues send me a direct message, I will try to help in more detail. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Impossible-North-400 · 2023-11-02 06:39 Is the backup data stored in some special format or it is just readable data? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-02 07:50 I think both Mailu and Mailcow can be configured to pickup mail via getmail or fetchmail instead of direct SMTP. You can configure Elasticsearch as a full text search indexer for dovecot imap, I am waiting for the next major dovecot release that will feature built-in xapian based FTS. In the meanwhile you can use notmuch as the mail indexer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Perpetual_Nuisance · 2023-11-02 08:29 I would advise very much \*against\* installing Proxmox \*just\* so you can put Carbonio on a VM - the overhead and unnecessary added complexity is crazy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Impossible-North-400 · 2023-11-02 09:11 I have already a proxmox server with 2*2680v3 128gb ram, I guess it will stand ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate-Fig-805 · 2023-11-02 09:31 What do you mean? I'm already using xapian FTS in dovecot starting v2.3.20 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-02 09:35 2.3.x I'd not yet shipped with most major stable lts distros and I am too lazy to install it from source. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate-Fig-805 · 2023-11-02 09:48 What distro you using? I'm using almalinux 8/9 and it's already included in docecot's repo. But I had to compile dovecot-xapian from git due to dovecot's and OS library version incompatibility. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-02 10:05 Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS After leaving my experimental need phase behind, I learned to love LTS versions :) in fact my mail retrieval / local server is running in a VM on Debian Stable which also does not have the "new" dovecot yet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Alfagun74 · 2023-11-02 10:21 I back up all my Emails in paperless-ngx. It allows me to search through all letters and documents i have. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate-Fig-805 · 2023-11-02 10:22 Ah, Ubuntu LTS. Yes, there's no xapian support yet in debian based distro. I used dovecot's own community repo in Almalinux 8 & 9 which already has xapian support. You'll gonna love xapian if you have need for fts, I'm not going back to solr after using xapian. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-02 10:31 I have been using notmuchmail indexer (which internally used xapian) for years, it works very well. From the CLI. But in my quest for simplification I just want to use the built in search functionality of whatever IMAP client I am using atm so built in FTS is the only way. Looking forward to dovecot 2.3.x! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mcc0unt · 2023-11-02 11:53 There’s something much better! Use the [Synology as docker service](https://github.com/vdsm/virtual- dsm) and backup all of your data (or just mails) with „[Active Backup for Microsoft 365](https://www.synology.com/en- us/dsm/packages/ActiveBackup-Office365)“. That’s bullet proof and tested. Or use a real Synology with that package. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Impossible-North-400 · 2023-11-02 15:32 I'm trying this, but for the sake of me I can't activate the active backup, it asks for a reservation Id that I don't have ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeoJackOfBlades · 2023-11-02 16:53 The file type archived is PDF or eml? What if The e-mail has attachments ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mcc0unt · 2023-11-02 16:59 Never heard of a reservation ID in that context. Do you have a screenshot? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Alfagun74 · 2023-11-02 17:06 Using gotenberg and Tika the email gets saved as eml and all attachments get saved separately no matter if they are images, word files or pdfs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- itsupport_engineer · 2023-11-02 17:17 It is just another IMAP service so it will be stored in the filesystem. However you will access it via WebMail interface. This instance is just offline and not a functional server, it is just a backup for search / viewing email via webinterface or even another IMAP client like Outlook. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unosbastardes · 2023-11-02 21:28 I have paperless and never thought of this. Kinda genius. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A9-EE-78-6A-C8-9F · 2023-11-02 22:26 Honestly didn't know that was a function. Gonna try tonight ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nirajtolia · 2023-11-03 05:01 Where is this email? If it is Microsoft 365, [Corso](https://corsobackup.io) is free, open-source, and works with Docker. However, [Alcion](https://www.alcion.ai/), the security- focused SaaS service based on Corso won't be a good fit because they have a 5 seat minimum. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Impossible-North-400 · 2023-11-03 06:08 It is a corporative mail ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rrrmmmrrrmmm · 2023-11-06 09:51 You might be looking for [Mailpiler](https://www.mailpiler.org/) and maybe a compose file like [this](https://github.com/jsuto/piler- examples/blob/master/examples/zentyal/docker-compose.yaml) or [this](https://github.com/stephdl/nethserver-piler/blob/aa3dc33734d4c9 63e31fb7d8fdb417775b4db8b0/root/etc/e- smith/templates/usr/share/piler/docker-compose.yaml/10base).
