Did you try Kamal? A simple tool for self-hosting your applications reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- strzibny 路 2023-11-02 03:52 I decided to deploy my new project with Kamal, the brand new tool from Basecamp. Did some of you tried it? Do you like it? I wrote all my notes down on how to deploy on a single server (handle SSL etc.) here: [https://nts.strzibny.name/deploying-rails-single-server- kamal/](https://nts.strzibny.name/deploying-rails-single-server- kamal/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rrrmmmrrrmmm 路 2023-11-02 09:23 It makes it easy if there's just a _single_ app to deploy and you don't want to do anything else. However, it's not optimized for orchestrating multiple web applications with each respective subdomains in a single orchestrating configuration and it also does not support proper server configuration to add tooling and hardening though. And of course nowadays I'd rather choose unprivileged Podman over Docker. But yes, it's good that the Rails folks embraces containers at... +checks watch+ ...the year 2023. It only took exactly ten years. I guess we can expect a nice tool for Podman in the year 2029 then? ;) But apart from that it's a nice blog post Josef. I love reading your content. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- strzibny 路 2023-11-02 13:35 Thank you :) Actually I wanted to build one myself. I wanted something like Kamal but relying on systemd, Podman, etc. But now that Kamal is out, I feel my tool would not get adoption even if technically better. That's the hard truth. And btw Rails peeps leverage containers for ages, especially because of Heroku :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rrrmmmrrrmmm 路 2023-11-02 14:13 Podman with Systemd? I would definitely be more than just interested. This is exactly the solution I've been looking for ages. Please ping me in case you decide to work on this anyway. Maybe you could even use CrystalLang to give a "single-binary- experience". 馃槃 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- strzibny 路 2023-11-02 14:22 Yeah. I already included running Podman in my book (Deployment from Scratch) and in the demos I for example rely on systemd socket that hold the connection for zero downtime (has its drawbacks but you don't need to boot two versions at 2x RAM). So I had this idea to build a tool that uses these primitives. And last time I checked running Podman improved as the systemd units from the early days are not that much fun, so it would really be interesting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rrrmmmrrrmmm 路 2023-11-02 15:15 I'm super interested in that. Seriously. And I have the feeling that we two are not the only ones.
