HDD Making sounds when writing reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wuemelii · 2023-11-01 20:10 Hey there, When my HDD writes it makes per sound I'm a little bit worried because I don't have any Backups. I will get a Backup Server at Black Friday maybe but what when the HDD goes out before then? Is it even bad? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-01 20:14 Hey there, how is your noisy HDD about selfhosting software services? Try subs like /r/Homelab /r/HomeServer /r/BuildaPC etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SomeOddCodeGuy · 2023-11-01 21:05 >Hey there, When my HDD writes it makes per sound I'm a little bit worried because I don't have any Backups. I will get a Backup Server at Black Friday maybe but what when the HDD goes out before then? Is it even bad? Are you talking about buying an entire machine at black friday, or another hard drive? In your shoes, regardless of whether the drive is dying or not, I'd personally buy another drive of the same size ASAP, pop it into the current server, and then image the current drive onto it as a backup. Depending on the price, I'd be tempted to snag another drive to also put loose file backups for stuff that change regularly between my image grabs. That way, if the drive dies, you literally just change the drive the machine boots from and keep going like nothing happened. Even if you find out the drive isn't dying, you've kind of heard a "warning shot" with this that there is always the chance it could happen, and it's usually nice to be prepared *before* rather than after. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-01 21:10 Because /r/selfhosted = helpdesk apparently. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wuemelii · 2023-11-01 21:10 Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-01 21:11 `cat /udev/random > /r/selfhosted` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-02 04:19 Exactly, at least often enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-11-06 18:43 ## Post Removed Hey, wuemelii!
