Optimizing My Media Server: H.265 to H.264 Conversion Dilemma reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-01 14:54 Selfhosted? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shadoodled · 2023-11-01 15:46 If you de decide to transcode, maybe look at Tidarr. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- root42_ · 2023-11-01 16:00 What devices don't support h265? I thought that was pretty ubiquitous these days. Converting to h264 will eat up quite a bit of space so keep that in mind as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mikrogeophagus-rami · 2023-11-01 16:11 He starts transcoding when I watch it in my google chrome browser or on my iPhone. The FireTV stick 4K eats the h265 without transcoding. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gripesandmoans · 2023-11-01 16:15 Try using VLC on the iPhone. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-01 17:11 Chrome can directly play HEVC video. But everything on Apple hardware is different, of course. I doubt that your phone cannot handle HEVC with hardware-accelerated playback, so the issue is likely some small incompatibility. Isnt there some Jellyfin or Jellyfin-compatible client app for iOS? Try that. Check the ffmpeg log of Jellyfin to find out why exactly it doesnt directly play them. It could be caused by specific audio formats, or subtitle formats, or the encoding parameters of the HEVC stream itself. Btw this has nothing to do with selfhosting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- techma2019 · 2023-11-01 17:44 Use Swiftfin (official Jellyfin client) for iPhone/Apple TV/iPad. Direct-play HEVC/h265. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thealtguy00 · 2023-11-01 18:15 all modern devices and browsers (except firefox) support h265/hevc playback. In settings -> Playback try turning on "prefer fmp4-hls". Or use another video player, like in android client you can use exoplayer (settings -> client settings) and you have seperate jellyfin app for windows. findroid for android also works ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tbrummell2 · 2023-11-01 18:22 It's crossposted to r/selfhosted..... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-01 18:26 Yes i can see that. But it doesnt have much to do with selfhosting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tbrummell2 · 2023-11-01 18:28 Agreed. I thought you were questioning what "selfhosted" was. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-11-01 18:51 Nope :) Because my comment was in /r/selfhosted and not on the original post in /r/DataHoarder ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tbrummell2 · 2023-11-01 18:53 Also didn't know if comments were linked, sort of like a symlink. Apparently they are not. :)
