Hardware recommendations for *arr suite reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- n00namer · 2023-11-01 07:54 Hey folks, I have Sony A80j at home, which is 4K OLED AndroidTV. So picture and audio is quite good, supporting Dolby Atmos and Vision. I want to setup *arr suite, for single home. I believe my TV doesn’t require transcoding as it can easily play 100GB video. I have raspberry pi 3b+ 2GB RAM, but I think it is not up to the task. Also, I do not have any storage solution. Can you suggest hardware to run such server? I’m more interested in running at docker. Curious maybe I should just get RPI 4 with externally powered HDD? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-01 08:11 Any NUC will do if you don't need hardware transcoding, if you do, get one with a CPU with QuickSync. Get a 4+ bay Synology NAS to store your media and mount the volume via NFS in your Plex container and *arr suite. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lexutzu · 2023-11-01 08:15 Raspberry Pi 4b, runs everything except torrent client and jackett (another raspberry pi) and Plex itself (Windows PC). Couldn't be happier. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stetsed · 2023-11-01 08:37 So it depends what you want to do, if it's just playback(as in you get your media via another device) any device will do just fine like a Pi4 with an external HDD(especially with them dropping in price after Pi5 announcement). However this will limit your expansion so the question becomes how much storage you think you will need. As the TV can nativley handle all those formats you don't need to do any transcoding, however personally I would say get something with a little more buffer room for if you ever do wanna play from a device that can't nativley display those things, or for if you ever want to expand your storage. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- n00namer · 2023-11-01 08:56 that’s probably the fair question. I have RPI 3b+ currently, so even investing in RPI 4b (around 100€) or just get some sort of mini-pc but I really do not want to spend much at the beginning ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stetsed · 2023-11-01 09:04 If it's just playback then even a RPI 3b+ should be fine to use, it has a Gb ethernet port(although limited to 300Mbps throughput), and 4 USB 2.0 ports, with the max for one port according to the spec being 480Mbps. Playback itself just requires a good enough network connection and fast enough drives to read the content. However if you want to transcode then the RPI 3b+ will sh\*t the bed. So you could test first with the RPI 3b+ with an external drive attached, see if it works for your workload if it does great no need to replace it :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- n00namer · 2023-11-01 09:12 I do not have HDDs as well (age of cloud) thinking about WD Elements Desktop HDD or WD My Book Desktop HDD. Both are externally powered. I saw that people more or less convinced to get NAS instead of external drives, but I probably won't benefit from it as I use cloud for backups ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Genubath · 2023-11-01 09:47 I have a MINISFORUM NPB5 Mini PC with 32GB DDR5 and an Intel Core i5-13500H which hosts all of my \*arr docker containers + plex Media server (and a few other stuff). You can get one for less than 500$. I also have a NAS with a bunch of HDDs that gives me a ton of storage space. If you must know, its a Terramaster F5-422 and tbh I wouldn't recommend it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zeal514 · 2023-11-01 11:56 Direct playback doesn't require much compute power. Just run Ubuntu server on the pi, spin up the containers, and get a fairly large HDD. An external HDD should be fine. Any transcoding will be a issue tho. Like, if you use Jellyfin, and it wants to transcode your subtitles (even tho it shouldn't), you won't be able to stream anything 😂. I had this exact issue, and it was kinda pathetic that couldn't get subtitles to stop transcoding. It isn't transcoding now, but I also have a way more powerful server. If you want to go more powerful. I'd recommend the build on Wolfgang's channel, with a N5105 NAS board, the N5105 is strong enough for 4k transcoding. It has 2x nvme, 6x sata, and up to 64gb of ram. Throw it in a decent case. I'd run Proxmox and Ubuntu server on Proxmox, this just makes it easy to backup your VM, in case something breaks and you want to rollback. At which point you can just throw HDDs in, or make them a ZFS pool, or a raid pool. Up to you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tcfjr · 2023-11-01 18:35 I use a Synology DS220+ to run the full \*arr suite, qBittorrent/PIA, Plex, Navidrome, AudioBookShelf, and various other apps - all as Docker containers. The NAS is a few years old now, but it still runs great. The current version of their two-bay Intel box is the DS224+. I added 4gb of additional RAM and two 8tb Ironwolf drives - all easey- peasey. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BeerAndLove · 2023-11-01 20:14 Just get any second-hand sff office pc. Hp lenovo dell, whatever. I got mine for 40$, two years ago, some i5, 8GB ram, with 256GB ssd and 1TB HDD Runs better than any Pi or similar. Can upgrade it, add gpu, more ram, second network card... Small, runs cold and quiet. And does not cost hundreds of $$ like mini pc's. You do not need much power for *arrs. If You get one with newer cpu, it can have transcoding done as well.
