Native Windows alternative to Overseer? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerfulAttorney3780 · 2023-11-01 01:34 Hey everyone, I've been bitten with the self-hosting bug the last couple months and after migrating from Windows, to a Linux VM, and now partially back to Windows (just for my core "media" cycle) I'm looking for alternatives to Overseerr that can be ran natively in Windows. Before I hear your crowd of y'all scream at me, I still have my Linux VM and I'm still going to be messing around with it and adding services to it. But I've had a lot of issues with certain things on it and my windows service seems to be a lot more stable so I want to keep my media cycle on Windows so my users aren't as affected by my tinkering. I may even still keep overseer on Linux but I would like at least some sort of alternative that runs on Windows so no matter what happens to my Linux VM, whether it's on, off, malfunctioning or what have you, My users will still be able to request content. Additionally, does anyone know of any good software to make images of Linux, or specifically Virtual Machines? Currently I'm using VMWare player free, but I have Windows Pro so I could go to Hyper-X. Thanks ahead of time for any suggestions you may have. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Firenyth · 2023-11-01 01:57 I've used ombi in the past, It worked well for me but my users just kept messaging me instead. not sure how it compares but might be worth a look. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Firenyth · 2023-11-01 01:59 for your second point my "server" is just as windows 10 pro install, I run hyper v for my VM's I prefered it since is just added through the windows add features ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sternbear87 · 2023-11-01 02:27 Docker desktop on windows and overseerr installed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BaconBakin · 2023-11-01 03:03 Yeh this is the best (only?) way to run it in Windows. The official installation instructions even detail it here: https://docs.overseerr.dev/getting-started/installation#windows ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zachfive87 · 2023-11-01 03:22 Use jellyserr. Build using yarn/nodejs. Follow the windows build instructions on jellyseer github. https://github.com/Fallenbagel/jellyseerr#windows ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheCudder · 2023-11-01 03:44 This. It's extremely simple to do. I've been running mine on Docker Desktop (Windows) for about 18 or so months with no issues. Recommend using docker compose yaml files for super simple updating. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerfulAttorney3780 · 2023-11-01 04:12 Thanks for the suggestion, I meant like a way to take an image of my current VM so I can redeploy it if/when I mess it up again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerfulAttorney3780 · 2023-11-01 04:14 I am trying to avoid docker or anything virtualized for this core media cycle I have. I know I can get Windows to reliably auto-start, and services to auto-start. I have issues once we get to things like Docker. Though note, I am not refusing to ever do Docker, I just want this core service of my server setup to all be native. I moved to Linux originally BECAUSE Docker Desktop was being such a bitch on Windows. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Firenyth · 2023-11-01 04:15 Hyper v has a checkpoint function. You can make a checkpoint or multiple and can revert back at any time. I've used it a handful of times with tinkering. Hope it helps ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerfulAttorney3780 · 2023-11-01 04:21 Thank you! I'm not sure how robust that is but I'll look into it. I want it so robust I can back it up somewhere else and literally recreate the machine from scratch anywhere. But this might be part of the solution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BaconBakin · 2023-11-01 04:21 > I am trying to avoid docker or anything virtualized for this core media cycle I have. Unfortunately, with Overseerr, I don't believe there's any way to run it natively within Windows without using Docker. The only option may be to use the suggession in the thread of using Jellyseerr instead, it sounds like that might run within Windows without docker/virtualising. >I know I can get Windows to reliably auto-start, and services to auto-start. I have issues once we get to things like Docker. As in can't get docker containers to auto-start when the computer restarts? There's a flag you can use: --restart unless-stopped If you use that when creating the container, it will always bring the container online if it's down, unless you manually stop it. I found using tools like Portainer to manage my docker containers to be quite helpful, and you're able to make changes to containers (like changing the restart policy) via a GUI which can make it a lot more user-friendly to some people. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerfulAttorney3780 · 2023-11-01 04:25 No I understand how to do all that. I wasn't trying to sidetrack the post but I have a long history of somehow fucking up things with doctor and virtual machines. I'm doing a lot better using the virtual machine and actual doctor Damon, all CLI, no GUI like desktop, but I messed up and somehow corrupted something in the Linux VM I think my computer locked up once and I had to reboot it with the power button and ever since the network for the Linux VM wouldn't work. It had the right IP address had the right IP settings nothing appeared to be changed but it just wouldn't connect It wouldn't respond to pings it couldn't ping anything else not even the host system it was on. And so thus all my services stopped working. The funny part is is that the Linux VM could tell something was wrong booted me into recovery mode or whatever I did what I could and then it started booting into normal mode but it still just like would not connect to the network I restarted the service you know made sure all my configurations are correct. It's just too unpredictable for me to put my core cycle on it at this point. I'm definitely going to keep experimenting and learning so eventually I'll get there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kon_dev · 2023-11-01 08:08 If you get a bit deeper into virtualization you might want to consider proxmox. Proxmox can just backup entire VMs and restore them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- habskilla · 2023-11-01 08:29 Hyper v checkpoint does have a limitation. If you have directly added a physical disk, it will not work. If all your storage is volumes, hyper v will save your ass. Work flow: Create a checkpoint Make some changes Mess up? No problem. Restore your checkpoint and your vm will be reset to exactly to what it was. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- habskilla · 2023-11-01 09:04 Ignore the downvotes. Docker Desktop for windows is pure evil. I lump DD for Windows and McAfee in the same boat. I ran into the same issue as you. Tried DD for Windows and greatly disliked it, but I fell in love Docker containers. My solution: I left my core downloading services as native Windows apps (SABnzbd, NZBget, and qbittorrent) because that is where my storage array is located. I had an old PC in the closet. Pulled that out and installed Ubuntu desktop with docker and docker compose. DO NOT INSTALL DOCKER DESKTOP! Here is where I installed all the other services like Ovevseerr as docker containers. I keep all my docker stuff in 2 directories /home/habskilla/docker-compose /opt/docker I keep a good backup of those directories!! If I mess up, no problem. Since everything is a container, I can restore the underlying files from the 2 directories and I’m back up and running. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Genubath · 2023-11-01 09:52 If you have docker desktop installed, try linuxserver's overseerr container. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerfulAttorney3780 · 2023-11-01 14:53 Can I like, export that checkpoint though and let's say recreate my exact virtual machine on another PC if I wanted to? That's what I'm looking for. Sometbing to like make an image of my VM. I allocated like 40gb to my entire VM, so if I could somehow replicate it, even in a 40gb file, I'd be happy. Like a 1:1 copy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerfulAttorney3780 · 2023-11-01 14:55 See? That's what I'm talking about. I literally put my post I wanted a native. Windows. Alternative. And half the people here are saying just desktop darker and run it in Windows. And I even said in my post that I'm not against stalker just in this specific use case I do not want to use it or anything virtual. I have definitely had more success with the Docker Daemon itself running on a Linux VM, but now I started running into issues with it being VM. Ideally I want to do exactly what you did and have a separate machine that has Linux installed like on the bare metal and they can work together. But until that happened this is my desired solution. I don't understand the downvotes either I've been very clear. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerfulAttorney3780 · 2023-11-01 14:57 That's funny you mention that because I was just looking into that last night, but I need another machine of some sort I think I have an old laptop or two somewhere if I could find them that I could probably install proxmox on and it would be a really good solution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kon_dev · 2023-11-01 15:07 I am running proxmox on an old ThinkPad T460, works great and has a build-in UPS 😀 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- habskilla · 2023-11-01 17:00 Sorry. No idea. Only worked with one hyper v manager ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant-Ad-5513 · 2023-11-02 16:50 I know proxmox can do clusters and active:passiv setups ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheCudder · 2023-11-04 11:46 Id say that's because people are typically afraid of Docker because..."it's hard". So that's where our thinking goes when someone says they don't want to deal with it. You didn't specify your reason behind avoiding it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerfulAttorney3780 · 2023-11-04 12:21 Yeah, I guess I get that. But I did say specifically that in my original post that I don't dislike Docker. I actually really like it. It's just failed for the specific use case for me and I'd rather give myself more time to get good at it. I've definitely gotten a lot better than I was but specifically dark with windows especially I had a bad experience with even more so than doctor on Linux. But it just happened again today for some reason my Linux VM lost the network connectivity It couldn't pay anything I can ping it It had all the right settings. And then I just came back hours and hours later and randomly checked on it and somehow it gained it back I didn't change anything. So strange things are a foot lol.
