How can I set up custom addresses and routing for my LAN reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SecretGood5595 · 2023-10-31 21:12 Hi, New to all this, just got a few services I'm running on a raspberry pi to get started, but I'd already like to start using an address like pihole.home.lan to access a service instead of memorizing the ip and port. Since everything is on the pi the services are have individual ports, which I think complicates things. Trying to do everything in docker too, mostly because it seems to make it easier to remove something if it gets botched. I've done a little googling to figure this out, seems like the solution is a combination of pihole to catch requests then send them to nginx to route them to individual ports. I found a guide which looks like it should do exactly this [https://github.com/pi- hole/docker-pi-hole/blob/master/examples/docker-compose-nginx- proxy.yml](https://github.com/pi-hole/docker-pi- hole/blob/master/examples/docker-compose-nginx-proxy.yml) but it the services aren't connecting to each other right. If anyone has another guide to accomplish something similar or could answer some questions I'd appreciate it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FARSUPERSLIME · 2023-10-31 22:56 I recommend using nginx proxy manager (same as nginx but with a gui page), if pihole is used as your dns server for your whole network you'll have to create DNS a or aaaa records that point to your proxy IP. An example is let's say you have a dashy dashboard at http://192.168.1.20:4000, put that in your nginx proxy manager, then in pihole make a subdomain entry, eg. dashy.mydomain.com, and point this to your proxy IP. Make sure this subdomain matches the subdomain you assigned the service in nginx. If you do all that it should work. The "nslookup" command can be used to check DNS records, just type "nslookup dashy.mydomain.com" and this should point to the IP of your proxy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SecretGood5595 · 2023-10-31 23:40 Ok awesome, I was on the right track! I think something got busted when I was playing around with all the different tools so going to start fresh later today. I'll make sure to use the proxy manager one too, didnt realize they were different. I think the "pimylifeup" guide I followed had used that one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FARSUPERSLIME · 2023-10-31 23:45 Yeah I've personally never used pure nginx but I believe it operates purely on cli and config files the GUI page makes it much easier to configure for sure.
