WeTransfer alternative that requires password on upload? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VladTheDismantler 路 2023-10-31 13:53 Yes, I searched on both this sub and on the internet, but couldn't find anything. I found a list of potential software here: [https://alternativeto.net/software/wetransfer/?platform=self- hosted](https://alternativeto.net/software/wetransfer/?platform=self- hosted). There are some amazing pieces of software, but I need something a bit more specific, that I am almost completely sure exists, because my use-case is not very niche: I want to be able to upload files either only from the local network or only with a password. I want to open the port so I can share stuff with outsiders, but I don't want random people to upload stuff. And it has to run as a Docker container. And yes, there are some pieces of software that offer Google Drive-like features, but that's just way too much for me. I don't need any advanced features and I only see that as overhead, as I already have other means of organizing my data for personal use. I just need time-limited password-protected uploads on a WeTransfer/Zippyshare kind of thing for when I need to share stuff. Basically I do photography as a hobby and I would like to easily share files. But I don't want my server to be used by others for uploads, lol. Yes, I would absolutely adore if end-to-end encryption would be available and stuff like that. I am currently running PsiTransfer and I was thinking of trying Lufi too, but neither seem to offer the upload password thing I need. So, if you are using or you know of similar software, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks a lot in advance! 馃榿 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dotinho 路 2023-10-31 14:02 NextCloud, you can set a upload directory and set duration time and password. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JustWhyRe 路 2023-10-31 14:17 I think Pingvin-Share have all the features you're looking for. https://github.com/stonith404/pingvin-share ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcadianarcadian 路 2023-10-31 14:19 [https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted#file- transfer---single-click--drag-n-drop- upload](https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted#file- transfer---single-click--drag-n-drop-upload) Pingvin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tech2but1 路 2023-10-31 15:02 Seafile? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jogai-san 路 2023-10-31 15:18 [Lufi](https://framagit.org/fiat-tux/hat-softwares/lufi) does passwords ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gaming09 路 2023-10-31 15:18 https://github.com/filebrowser/filebrowser/releases/ This does everything and is ridiculously small Can put it behind a cloudflare tunnel and bypass the share URL and use their 2 factor too ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mirisbowring 路 2023-10-31 15:21 i think https://github.com/YouTransfer/YouTransfer does this ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ovizii 路 2023-10-31 15:45 youtransfer has last been updated in 2020 and is looking for a maintainer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VladTheDismantler 路 2023-10-31 15:46 Paswords for uploading? As in, does it ask for an admin password when you upload so that random people can't upload random stuff? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mirisbowring 路 2023-10-31 15:48 Lol am still running the container - thanks for the info ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ovizii 路 2023-10-31 15:56 Just to clarify: I didn't want to diss that tool, and I'd love to see it get an update, but it just seems insecure to me, knowing it isn't being maintained. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jogai-san 路 2023-10-31 16:00 Sorry, no, its a password per upload. You can protect it with your reverse proxy though. Both npm and cosmos-server could do that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mirisbowring 路 2023-10-31 16:01 No i totally agree to you 馃憤 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Particular-Way7271 路 2023-10-31 16:18 Gokapi. It s really a selfhoster wetransfer alternative. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu 路 2023-10-31 17:33 https://github.com/psi-4ward/psitransfer Using tus.js uploader so parallel connections for faster up- / download. Allows for password protected and 1-time downloads, resumable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VladTheDismantler 路 2023-10-31 17:37 I am using that currently. I mentioned in my post :-) The issue is that I cannot set an admin password so that only I can upload files. It simply does not have that feature. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu 路 2023-10-31 17:40 Yeah sorry didn't read to the end like any good redditor :) But I guess you could just add basic auth to the upload page or protect it via a client certificate? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VladTheDismantler 路 2023-10-31 17:44 haha, lol, dw I might do something outside of the app itself, by blocking certain pages and stuff, but my current setup is pretty basic and I didn't have the time to play around yet. Since there are so many options, I just hoped that one of them already had this feature implemented. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu 路 2023-10-31 17:49 Might be that some other tool brings password protected upload, but i think that tus.js with multiple parallel connections and resumable up- downloads is a pretty big USP for psitransfer, that's the main reason why I installed it. With traefik, basic auth is really just adding one line: https://doc.traefik.io/traefik/middlewares/http/basicauth/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VladTheDismantler 路 2023-10-31 17:53 That looks pretty promising. I'll take a look over reverse proxies after my exam session. Do you recommend using something like a CloudFlare tunnel thing? Or should I just run everything on my home server? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu 路 2023-10-31 17:57 I am a hardcore open source self hoster. I would never consider a commercial service like tailscale or cloudflare for my network. I just point a domain name to a dyndns CNAME and run a pfsense firewall with HAproxy in front of my services. Maybe that's old school but it works well for me - for several years already. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VladTheDismantler 路 2023-10-31 18:06 Having a homelab/server is just a useful hobby for me. I'd really go into the firewall and proxy stuff, but I am a bit worried security- wise, because I have no idea about how to properly configure it. I guess I'll go and watch some tutorials for that, lol. I am a CS student but my knowledge doesn't really go into that kind of stuff. Thanks a lot for everything! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu 路 2023-10-31 18:10 Yeah, that's why something like pfsense (or opnsense) or any other specialized firewall in front of your network is a good idea since they come with reasonable defaults. Usually they are rather too restrictive than too open, so that's a good starting point for security. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- onekorama 路 2023-10-31 19:08 I use also PsiTransfer, as its an amazing software. Maybe you could use something like Authelia to filter some addresses, in this way only you, as an identified person, will be able to upload data to the server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marmata75 路 2023-10-31 20:56 This. Works perfectly for this use case! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linxbro5000 路 2023-10-31 21:06 I am happy user of Psitransfer, too. Of course it offers a password protected upload. Just set the environment variable "PSITRANSFER\_UPLOAD\_PASS" check at [https://hub.docker.com/r/psitrax/psitransfer](https://hub.do cker.com/r/psitrax/psitransfer) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linxbro5000 路 2023-10-31 21:13 Check [https://hub.docker.com/r/psitrax/psitransfer](https://hub.docke r.com/r/psitrax/psitransfer) again. If you set the variable PSITRANSFER\_UPLOAD\_PASS then just the admin (=you) can upload to Psitransfer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Only-Pin-490 路 2023-10-31 22:45 I use pingvin share ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oriongr 路 2023-11-01 00:05 Liquidfiles鈥ot free but does what you want plus more ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VladTheDismantler 路 2023-11-01 02:46 >PSITRANSFER\_UPLOAD\_PASS well, I was dumb.
