Hello, Alex from Immich here - We recently got an opportunity to discuss self-hosting complexity with The Vergecast (from theverge.com). It brought some good discussion on there, and I think you guys would like to hear it as well. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lannistersstark · 2023-10-30 20:24 It might be worthwhile reaching out to Jupiter Media's Selfhosted podcast peeps as well. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Earthborn92 · 2023-10-30 20:48 I Setup immich on my unraid server last week. Holy hell it is good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ghlave · 2023-10-30 21:23 I love how the inline player doesn't even have a volume control but it has a subscribe button! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MrHaxx1 · 2023-10-30 22:33 Great priorities lmao ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ttylery · 2023-10-30 22:54 Is it worth using over nextcloud from a purely backup point of view? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dlm2137 · 2023-10-30 23:01 What do you like about it? Need a photo workflow and I’m exploring options ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheVortuks · 2023-10-30 23:27 Wouldn't say, harder to move to anything else, as it has it's own file scheme ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Earthborn92 · 2023-10-30 23:34 Off the top of my head: 1. Multiuser 2. ML built-in. Facial recognition is great. 3. All geotagged photos are mapped to a heatmap. I love this feature. 4. Really fast as it uses redis+postgresql14. 5. Auto backup from the phone app (iOS and android both). This is the most important thing, you just set it up for family members and they have to do absolutely nothing to ensure that photos are always backed up. No VPN connection required if you have a domain/endpoint. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Earthborn92 · 2023-10-30 23:35 I was deciding between this and nextcloud, I chose immich because I just wanted a photo/video software. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SNThrailkill · 2023-10-30 23:44 I think he means Jupiter Broadcasting. In which case you're looking for u/ironicbadger. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lannistersstark · 2023-10-30 23:46 Indeed I do, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- altran1502 · 2023-10-31 01:17 Hello, this is false. Recently, we added a new library feature in which you can use your existing gallery. As well as you can use the default upload library and specify your own ingestion storage template. You can read more about the two features here [https://immich.app/docs/features/libraries](https://immich.app/docs/f eatures/libraries) [https://immich.app/docs/administration/storage- template](https://immich.app/docs/administration/storage-template) Cheers! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ruuutherford · 2023-10-31 01:40 Looking forward to checking this out. It’ll be nice to hear your voice! I’ve been on Immich for a month now. I’m going to continue maintaining it alongside Google Photos. As soon as it gets good enough, I’ll be happy to redirect my Google One feed directly to Immich! (And my own NAS hard drives wink) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pimenteldev · 2023-10-31 02:07 I NEVER thought I was going to self host a photo gallery/backup solution until I moved from iOS to Android two months ago. I don't like to be vendor locked but photos was something I was relying on Apple only for the past three years. I've been homelabbing for one year now, so I thought "well, this could be the time to try". I tried Prisma first, but they didn't have a great first party app and also the backup needed another app (which I paid). Just after two or three days I discovered Immich and oh God I'm grateful for that. The solution works perfectly. It was the first application that I used with Authentik as well and it's FLAWLESS. I truly love it and I really appreciate your work. I'm looking forward to donate to the project because, as a developer, I know that this isn't easy. May God bless you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ExperimentalGoat · 2023-10-31 02:16 >Auto backup from the phone app (iOS and android both). No VPN Do you have this running with a reverse proxy? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Earthborn92 · 2023-10-31 02:17 Yes, I use the NPM docker + Namecheap DDNS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ironicbadger · 2023-10-31 02:21 A wild badger appeared. Alex, please reach out! Looks like I know my next service spin-up! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- altran1502 · 2023-10-31 02:56 Thank you. I am blessed to receive so much support from my wife, the community, and the team. I cannot thank everyone enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thinkyougotmewrong · 2023-10-31 03:46 NPM Docker? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Earthborn92 · 2023-10-31 03:58 Nginx Proxy Manager ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Senkyou · 2023-10-31 05:26 I've been trying it all week (just to test the backup solution on a second machine to make sure I don't lose data/config) and once I'm happy with that I'm gonna switch my home photo/movie backups to Immich. I've fallen in love with it. And, more than many projects, I've been sure I'm gonna be contributing to the project (monetarily, I can't code or anything) right from the get go. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nicopipe · 2023-10-31 07:14 Is immich now in CA? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HumbertFG · 2023-10-31 07:32 Depends. I mean it does photos. It does 'em well, awesomely well, tbh. So, it 'backs up your phone's pictures'. It doesn't do like.. documents, or chats, or 'files' or calendars or whatever else NextCloud has in it ( that I never used). I've used NexCloud for like.. a year and a bit now. I used it to 'offload' the photo's from my family phones because I object to paying for the $10/$20/$60 'iCloud+" thing. I'm now moving to Immich. 'cos all I wanna do is photo's. So - it depends on your use case. But if it's 'Just photos(tm)' then yes. \* \*caveat. Developer says "Don't use this as a sole avenue for your photos backup". 'cos uh. Beta stuffs! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- altran1502 · 2023-10-31 09:25 I would recommend to at least use something like a NUC instead, to leverage more performance CPU and expandability of tha hard disk as well as RAM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lidstah · 2023-10-31 11:13 Just jumping in the thread to also thank you a lot for the work put in Immich, it's an awesome software. Coupled with a Wireguard VPN to home on the phone and automatic sync I'm sure to never lost a picture (I daily backup my kubernetes workloads volumes, with a weekly upload to an external object storage), while not exposing anything outside my network. My wife is also an happy user. Just a small (but not really urgent) request: if the Helm chart for kubernetes could get a bit more love when it comes to keeping up with upstream releases it would be perfect (I just modify image.tag version manually in a yaml file which also contains database setup and such, which I then feed to helm when I upgrade, not really what I'd call a hassle), as right now upstream is 1.83.0 and helm chart installs 1.79.1. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mattague · 2023-10-31 12:18 Pretty sure this was added within the last month or so. Still, just does how active this Dev is, massive respect ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Senkyou · 2023-10-31 12:38 Ok cool. I have seen my poor 4 max out on most tasks. The video transcoding kicks its ass, but that's not a huge surprise considering the specs of a Pi4. I do have the 8GB model though and have seen CPU is the bottleneck, not the ram. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tenekev · 2023-10-31 12:42 So Alex created Immich because of his wife. Well, he has thousands of people rooting for his marriage. 😄 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheVortuks · 2023-10-31 12:52 Hello u/altran1502 :D Great feature tbh. but there's one small problem, if we would treat it as a Google Photos alt. If I want to upload Photos from iPhone(as an example) I have to use upload library, which forces me to use yours format of storing photos. If I want to store photos in original names, I have to sync using other app(like Nextcloud/Synology) and then connect it to the Immich. As you can see, it's not a favourable thing to do. Right now I can move from NextCloud to Immich(transfer all photos), but no the other way around(using internal library). What about thumbnails in external library, do you generate and store them somewhere else? Anyway - I hope that you'll make an excellent alternative for Google Photos and I'm impressed by the whole project, don't get me wrong - I'm just afraid of loosing capability over transfering files to another destination. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eroc1990 · 2023-10-31 13:27 Is it though? He was directly mentioned two comments above where he appeared. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ttylery · 2023-10-31 14:18 Ive stripped out most everything from Nextcloud, I only use it for file storage, providing remote access to specific files to friends, and photo backup from my phone. Although it does work mostly for the phone photo backup, Im not terribly impressed with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rymn · 2023-10-31 16:09 The verge? As in the same people that can't even assemble a computer? The same people that post low quality garbage in the regular? You'd do better with a reddit AMA I think. I will be listening though because I am considering switching from photo prism after many recommendations 😊 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- r4nchy · 2023-10-31 17:31 I didn' knew about theverge, got to know about them this year. I love reading their blog, they dig too deep. They dig soo deep that they even found lisa that Apple buried. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreestyleStorm · 2023-10-31 17:42 The dues who can't build a basic desktop? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- luckymethod · 2023-10-31 18:13 I'm setting it up and liking so far but it's not as straightforward as photoprism for example. If I can give you a small suggestion, the setup instructions could use some work, whatever you can do to ease adoption is going to pay enormous dividends later on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-11-06 18:48 Thank you for your share!
