Cosmos Cloud Opinions reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BeardedBearUk · 2023-10-30 12:33 Looking round for a Dashboard I cam across [Cosmos Cloud](https://cosmos-cloud.io). Has anyonehad any experience of this self-hosting OS? It look interesting but just wanted to get opinions/reviews on what it is like, security etc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-10-30 12:56 I been messing with it and I like it. Lot more secure than CasaOS and has more functionality for people of all skill ranges. They are improving it all the time and the developer is a member of this sub. You should give it a try it is easy to get up and running on a VM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-30 12:58 I personaly would stay far away from these "we do everything for you" systems to selfhost any app. You not only miss out on the learning experience but you actually might miss vital steps like how to backup your personal data and so on. Add to that the looming threat of these systems being abandoned and you stuck on the last version. I can only recommend to **self**host. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BeardedBearUk · 2023-10-30 12:59 I am self-hosting on a Raspberry Pi 4. From a clean start do I just install docker and then Cosmos Cloud? Also does it work with OMV? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dustinjack99 · 2023-10-30 12:59 I’ve been tinkering with this hosting platform the past couple weeks and absolutely love it. Biggest wins Cosmos gives out of the box: - Working SSL certs and renewal out of the box. - One click control of isolating, controlling, and networking your docker containers - Auth guards that can wrap your whole self hosted ecosystem - Basic one-click security practices like geoblocking They already have a marketplace where you can spin up most services seamlessly. Any services you can’t find, you can splash in a docker- compose.yml and that’ll get you most of the way there. Haven’t touched the Constellation VPN yet, gunna give that a try sometime soon. But loving this OS so far. One of the most painless ways I’ve ever set up a server. Only drawbacks so far is that the UI has some minor bugs here and there, and the documentation could be more fleshed out, but I can see this becoming a standard tech if more attention / adoption happens. It’s a solid, amazing tool. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-10-30 13:09 You have to install something like Ubuntu Server 22.04 and it runs on top of that. Don't know about OMV since I don't use that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- azukaar · 2023-10-30 13:16 Dev here :) Cosmos' philosophy is summarized as such Be a tool: it does not override docker to abstract it, instead, it integrates docker. The difference is, if you want to spin up containers from CLI, you can (and it will work just as well with the other features like Docker). Be a baseline: Overall the goal of Cosmos is not to do everything for you but to give you a baseline: it provides you with all the necessary bits and pieces to selfhost seamlessly and safely. It is then giving you the keys to expand any areas that you want to expand. For example using Portainer or wireguard instead of Cosmos' defaults is very doable Be a learning platform: Cosmos does not hide away anything from you. You can manually manage docker containers, the market shows you what compose it is going to bring up, and so on... It is in my opinion on the contrary a great way to learn "the right way" of doing things. Learning on your own can cause you to go astray quite badly into extremely poorly design setups No vendor locking: Should Cosmos ever be "abandonned" (hopefully never :) ) it is very easy to bring up NPM and move all your proxy routes to it. Since it's just vanilla docker containers, things will work out of the box Remember that Selfhost is all about ownership: and Cosmos is designed from the ground up to not take that away from you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- azukaar · 2023-10-30 13:17 Thanks for the good words! for your questions: yes and yes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- machetie · 2023-10-30 14:10 this. Agreed ui and docs need work, dashboard will be a nice addition soon. but otherwise solid for the last month. The Discord is a great source, the Dev lives there very responsive! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-30 14:38 Check /r/CosmosServer I dont use it myself beyond being curious about it. But i think its a good choice for beginners to get started with selfhosting the typical things like Pihole and immich. And the dev seems very active. CasaOS is similar. UmbrelOS is a dumpster fire. Tipi also exists, seems alright. Start9 seems a lot like UmbrelOS, i dont like it at all. Yunohost is kind ot similar to all of these but its a actual OS and it doesnt use Docker to deploy the services. If you do want to try any of them, imo install and try both Cosmos and Casa (not on the same machine at the same time ffs) and give them a try. Cosmos probably is the best currently but thats of course just a matter of opinion and personal taste. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BeardedBearUk · 2023-10-30 15:25 I have already tried casaOS and umbrelOS and for various reason didn't like them. Thanks for you advice ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-30 15:32 Okay :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lexutzu · 2023-10-30 16:10 I have been using it for about 2 or 3 months now, bought a raspberry pi 4 and a domain just for it, because it was so easy to use, I am really happy with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rentzington · 2023-10-30 17:44 does cosmos allow for manual updating of the docker instances deployed through the dashboard? i ran into issues with umbrel they dont let you update anything outside the app store. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rentzington · 2023-10-30 17:46 i only use umbrel for invidious these days and even then it needs constant restarts. i had a lot of issues getting my own docker of invidious to work and gave up ---------------------------------------------------------------------- azukaar · 2023-10-30 17:55 It does :) it's all in your control, that's one of the big difference with Unraid / Umbrel / and so on ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Omni__Owl · 2023-10-30 18:07 I've been messing with it myself and my current conclusion is that it has some way to go. It's a nice idea and I think there is a lot of potential, but the current state of it feels very alpha still and so you have to go into it expecting that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flyingvwap · 2023-10-30 18:37 What's the cost model? If there isn't one, why not? If I use this product and want to move off it a month or so later how hard is it to do so? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BeardedBearUk · 2023-10-30 18:40 Sorry, I don't understand the question in relation to the original post. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- azukaar · 2023-10-30 19:22 \- it is very easy to bring up NPM and move all your proxy routes to it. Since it's just vanilla docker containers, things will work out of the box \- for now it's all free, next year the VPN feature will be paid ---------------------------------------------------------------------- janstadt · 2023-10-30 23:26 Ah bummer. Will you charge for people who already have the vpn configged and running? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- azukaar · 2023-10-30 23:42 yes sorry, there is a notice at the top of the screen about it. This is the most "fair" I could think for financing the project as this is by far the biggest feature of the software. But you shouldn't expect the price to be indecent, inspiration will be taken from the plex pass Always opened to discussing alternatives thought ---------------------------------------------------------------------- webbkorey · 2023-10-31 01:30 My thoughts exactly ---------------------------------------------------------------------- art_of_onanism · 2023-10-31 05:12 It'll work because OMV is just debian. Source: I'm running Cosmos on my OMV server now ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-10-31 12:19 Good to know. I figured it would but hadn't tried it myself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zottelchen · 2023-11-03 14:26 Personally I am not trusting Cosmos. I've hosted their previous version to run a project for my thesis. In this time the build process broke and the "fix" was to manually restore a backup. So that was annoying in a highly stressful time, but also it is one of those platforms saying "everything is automatic" when it simply is not. (Also sometimes it feels like there is some astroturfing going on in this subreddit, not sure if that is the case.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Entry_Plug · 2023-11-20 20:43 What is OMV? And what distro do you recommand to run Cosmos Cloud on a Tiny PC (N100) ? I was thibking of ZotinOS lite but Ubuntu server is maybe a good choice because of it's lightweight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-11-20 21:38 OMV is Open Media Vault. I have Cosmos running on an Ubuntu Server 22.04 VM in Proxmox. I would stick with Ubuntu or Debian. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Somoch-MoraguerRRR · 2023-12-25 12:51 As an Umbrel user since the early days, I’m curious: what about it makes it a dumpster fire? I definitely have uptime issues on my RPI4 but is there more behind the scenes I’m not following? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Smoker-Nerd · 2023-12-27 18:35 In my direct experience, compared to CasaOS and UmbrelOS it is the only one that works out-of-the box even on a RHEL-based: I am using it on Almalinux 9... in combo with Cockpit (because you always need a terminal and a folder manager with root privileges in the end) it allows you to really do quite a lot. The only difference, AlmaLinux has more RAM consumption in idle, but it allows you to run a few more dockers on my old dual core lenovo that I'm playing with as a home server Also, I added Cockpit as a "fake" app in Cosmos via its url management, something that could not be done with either UmbrelOS or CasaOS.
