Open source google fonts alternative reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jamsy100 · 2023-10-30 06:14 Hello everyone! I'm looking for a self-hosted alternative to Google Fonts. I've noticed that many open-source projects rely on Google Fonts, but in cases like a private LAN, it might not be accessible. I'm wondering if there's an alternative solution that would allow open-source projects to configure their own font provider. Any suggestions? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-30 06:53 /r/webdev? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jamsy100 · 2023-10-30 06:54 Really? I thought it might be relevant here because lots of self hosted project relies on fonts ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-30 07:34 Dafont? Adobe Webfonts? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bloodrose_GW2 · 2023-10-30 08:58 You know you can download and self-host google fonts, right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kasalacto · 2023-10-30 09:08 for me, it confused me what you really wanted, because you are using open-source or self-hosted interchangeably. But reading it fully, you actually meant the latter. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- s_and_s_lite_party · 2023-10-30 09:09 Can't you still use them but download them once and serve them from a web server on your LAN? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CerberusMulti · 2023-10-30 11:24 Not sure what you are asking for specifically. You know that you can download fonts from Google Fonts and self-host them, right? This is what many do for networks that are not connected to the internet and works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- masonen · 2023-10-30 17:07 Also: normally you would implement a fallback font for any external font that is availiable on the system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CerberusMulti · 2023-10-30 17:27 This is true, all browsers have a "default" font they will fall back on if it cant access the one on the page. I was just very confused in this post by the request for "alternative" to google when it was really a self hosted one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jamsy100 · 2023-10-31 06:13 I can add a font to a my project but can I serve them the same way google fonts sever does? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jamsy100 · 2023-10-31 06:14 Maybe. I just wonder if there’s a platform the kinda mimic the google fonts. Something with a web UI that will serve fonts I’ll add to it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daYMAN007 · 2023-10-31 09:16 https://gwfh.mranftl.com/fonts ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jamsy100 · 2023-11-03 14:45 >https://gwfh.mranftl.com/fonts thank you. Can the url of the font itself be directed at this server? cause all their examples get the font file from a local folder ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jamsy100 · 2023-11-03 14:52 Just to clarify, what I meant in my post is that I'd like to self-host fonts in a similar manner to how Google does it. For instance, if I have a website on a local network and it typically fetches fonts from Google, I'd like it to function the same way if I replace the URL with my own self-hosted server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CerberusMulti · 2023-11-03 18:29 Which is what many do, they just download the fonts used in their project and store them on the webserver. This is not 100% part by part same as google does but very close. Having it on a separate server from the one hosting the webpage is unnecessary . ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daYMAN007 · 2023-11-03 21:44 You can download a single font from that. IF that is not enough and you want to mirror all the fonts, you can grab the "opensource" git reposi you can clone this repo [https://github.com/google/fonts?tab=readme-ov- file](https://github.com/google/fonts?tab=readme-ov-file) And run it through lan cache or something you will ofcourse also have to rewritte the request from the webpage. Might be doable with a nginx filter? Anywas as this sounds really useless, you will probably have to do this yourself. This browser extension also kinda does what you want, but doesn't have all the fonts: [https://www.localcdn.org](https://www.localcdn.org) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jamsy100 · 2023-11-03 23:04 Why useless? Take for example Penpot a self hosted platform. It uses google to get fonts. My idea is that there might be a self hosted (maybe even open source) project that I will able to configure it to use instead of google, This way it will work offline ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daYMAN007 · 2023-11-04 07:25 There isn't which is why you would have to rewrite the fonts.googleapis server on via dns or something similar. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jamsy100 · 2023-11-04 07:44 Ok thank you!
