Put a computer on a differenct location? (Service) reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorita_ · 2023-10-28 22:29 So I want to pay one time for hardware and then small payments for electricity and bandwith. That is why I love to make things locally. And its cheaper in the long term usage. But I hate to hear noise 24/7. I want to hear absolute nothing. So is there a service where I can pay one time for hardware and put the hardware to one location (not my home) and pay the "small" service cost? I hope you understand my english. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Grafnus · 2023-10-28 22:35 This is called Colocation. Buy my experience of looking at the options concluded that it would be more expensive as renting a small VPS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-28 23:17 Or you could simply buy hardware that is passively cooled and produces no noise? And this isnt really about selfhosting software services. Try subs like /r/HomeServer /r/Homelab /r/HomeNetworking and /r/BuildaPC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorita_ · 2023-10-28 23:20 Oh Im sorry. Thanks for your answer and suggesting these subs. Do you think that I Should delete the post? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- roman5588 · 2023-10-28 23:21 Colocation is probably $100 a month per 1u in a proper DC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- death_hawk · 2023-10-28 23:21 It really depends on capability. If price is more important than performance? Then yeah, a small VPS is going to be cheaper. If you need a lot of CPU/RAM/drive space/GPUs, colos are somewhat fixed in pricing, only really changing by the amount of power you require. If you have a half dozen work GPUs, you're gonna pay more than someone with an integrated GPU. For me personally it's drive space. I'm paying about $100 for 40TB raw of space on a dedicated server. For the same $100 I can colo a 4U with 400TB of space. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-28 23:31 Thats up to you. Does a hardware question make sense in a software sub? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Grafnus · 2023-10-29 07:19 That is totally correct! But I got the feeling that this wasn't about a dedicated server with exceptional Hardware (like a lot of Storage, CPU power or GPUs). On addition I would like to point out another issue with colocation: If you but your Hardware and coclocate it somewhere, you are responsible for that Hardware! That means if you 20 TB HHD failes. You need to buy a new one. If you rent the Hardware you may lose data (Backups for the win) but you don't have to pay for the replacement. A couple years back I had a dedicated machine failing some HDDs. After some investigation from me and my hosting provider we figured out that a HDD failed. 10 Minutes later the server had a new HDD and the Raid configuration kicked in and applied redundancy for my data. That would have cost me around 50-70€ at that time for a new used HDD at that capacity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- death_hawk · 2023-10-29 18:04 > you are responsible for that Hardware This is also correct. To be fair, 70€ is cheap compared to the total cost of a new server that you sent off to colo. You'd also be responsible for paying for remote hands to replace the hard drive unless you're coloing nearby that you can do it yourself. And while you're correct on exceptional hardware (even I listed an extreme example) it doesn't really take much to be "exceptional". A dedicated server with some older hardware is easily $100. You could buy it for a grand and coloing something like a "normal" 1U is quite a bit less than $100. You'd start "making" money on month 16.
