ownCloud or NextCloud for office and collaborative work? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BouncyPancake · 2023-10-28 03:37 I know the discussion of ownCloud vs NextCloud is as old as time but most of those discussions focus on the photo and file syncing features. I wanna know if ownCloud or NextCloud would be better for office and collaborative work. Stuff like hosting and running Collabora, CalDAV, CardDAV, file sharing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yotis · 2023-10-28 03:45 I can talk only as a internal file sharing / collaboration tool, but from this perspective running Nextcloud on enterprise environment works like a charm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- C4ptainK1ng · 2023-10-28 07:00 Nextcloud. Should be easy to decide. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kapnkrunche · 2023-10-28 07:24 If using it as just a file server, owncloud is superior for its stability probably because it's tested better. I've had nextcloud break on production multiple times. It moves fast and breaks things, which is not ideal for production environments. Nextcloud has a bunch of apps, and at first I tried several and they were cool, but now I prefer reliability over a bunch of half-baked apps. I run both nc and oc by the way. Nc has better mobile app support and some cool apps, oc is frustrating because of lack of features, but it is rock solid compared to nc's frustrating breakage. Hopefully quality increases but it's been years of sometimes very painful production issues. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DasKokosnuss · 2023-10-28 13:21 Nextcloud is a fork of Owncloud. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_am_Pauly · 2023-10-28 14:04 I run nextcloud and collabora. Works well enough. But if you want excel tasks id probably use ms 365. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- violet-crayola · 2023-10-28 14:25 U have old information. Modern owncloud is a full rewire in golang with way better architecture. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- violet-crayola · 2023-10-28 14:25 Originally yes, not anymore - owncloud was fully rearchitected ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DasKokosnuss · 2023-10-28 14:44 Yeah, I use OCIS on my server, it's really great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trexxeon · 2023-10-29 20:31 If nextcloud hangs on to their old codebase oCIS is going to grow rapidly as it matures, it’s really great and does what it’s supposed to really well ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trexxeon · 2023-10-29 20:33 OwnCloud infinite scale.. nextcloud has a lot of stuff but more is. It always better ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -eschguy- · 2023-10-30 18:28 I've only used Nextcloud, but I don't have many complaints about it.
