Colo for selfhosted lab? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 0pointenergy · 2023-10-27 15:22 In the next year, I’m looking at setting up a personal Colo for offsite backups and redundancy. Honestly, it’s probably more than I want to spend. But most of my friends and family have data caps they are already hitting, so I can’t put it there. Anyone doing something similar? And do you have any advice I need to consider while trying to set this up? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-10-27 15:56 I pay for object storage on Backblaze. I could probably find cheaper elsewhere (wasabi maybe), but it works and it's not that much of a difference for me. Depending on how much data you change per month, you can send a HD with your most recent backup, and only backup the difference nightly. Again, if you generate a lot of changes that might not be feasible. You can also try renting a VPS such as Hetzner. Will probably be cheaper than colocation for a moderately sized server. Unless of course you need the computing power, then colocation might be cheapest. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 0pointenergy · 2023-10-27 16:10 Yeah, looking for some computer power too. Not a lot, but enough to run Plex and a few other services. I have built all my servers/NASs from scratch and want to do the same for the Colo. I have used backblaze before, and might use them again. But I’d rather host it all myself, if I can. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-10-27 16:41 Ah. I misunderstood then. I thought it was mostly backup, but it seems you want to host all your stuff there. In this case colo makes sense. Expensive though! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Camo138 · 2023-10-27 23:18 I looked into a colo lab in Australia. Not cheap at all
