Docker container for a landing page reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crayiii · 2023-10-27 12:48 I have a few web services installed on our home network and would like to have a landing page that family inside our LAN can go to and then just click a button to go to each of the services. This will help the family not need to remember port numbers. Is there a docker container that anyone would recommend for this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Legitimate_Farm_3095 · 2023-10-27 13:11 https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=landing+page&restrict_sr= on&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-27 13:31 They are called "personal dashboards" and are easy to find with a simple search of this subreddit, and also you can look at the "aweesome selfhosted" list in the subreddit sidebar, it has a entire section on such dashboards for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ______-_-_________ · 2023-10-27 13:49 I setup an Nginx container and created my own html page for family. Even added a Google search bar to it. It only has a few links to services that I want my wife to use. Everything else goes on Homer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crayiii · 2023-10-27 13:53 Awesome! I wasn’t sure what the term was. I guess the downvote was because I didn’t search. Sorry to have wasted your time downvoters. 😂 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- s_91 · 2023-10-27 13:54 This could help: https://github.com/azukaar/cosmos-Server/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- am_kobold · 2023-10-27 14:40 Why would this need to be dockerised? Just run a webserver and put together a small HTML file with all your links. There's no need to download a whole other OS just to display a static site ... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jogai-san · 2023-10-27 14:46 [Not Every Container Has an Operating System Inside](https://iximiuz.com/en/posts/not-every-container-has-an- operating-system-inside/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jogai-san · 2023-10-27 14:49 If you rely on port numbers you can also use cosmos-server to manage your containers and add hostnames to your services to access them (that would be the reverse-proxy functionality of cosmos). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flaming_m0e · 2023-10-27 15:05 > There's no need to download a whole other OS just to display a static site Tell us you don't know how Docker works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Boring-Concert-3102 · 2023-10-27 15:42 Personal Dashboards are just that personal there are plenty of them out there dashy, homarr, heimdall I like flame [https://github.com/pawelmalak/flame](https://github.com/ pawelmalak/flame) but thats just cause it suits my needs as others have said have a look at the awesome self hosted list and try some out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dcabines · 2023-10-27 16:05 My favorite is called Homepage. Give it a try! https://github.com/gethomepage/homepage ---------------------------------------------------------------------- am_kobold · 2023-10-27 16:08 Okay? And? You know as well as I do that most do. The question stands, why does this need to be Dockerised? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- am_kobold · 2023-10-27 16:08 I know quite well how docker works, which means I also know most images are based on an OS, even if it is minimal like Alpine. But that's what you get for commenting on reddit, people trying to gotcha you for every minute detail. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flaming_m0e · 2023-10-27 16:10 > I know quite well how docker works, which means I also know most images are based on an OS "based on an OS" is NOT the same as "download a whole other OS" You're not "downloading a whole other OS"... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- am_kobold · 2023-10-27 16:13 Pray tell me then, what am I downloading when I download the alpine image? The Ubuntu image? Is it not an OS? Oh sure, you'll claim it's a part of it, a layer, whatever. I don't care :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Averexs · 2023-10-27 16:16 For ease of use for the rest of the family I recommend Heimdall https://heimdall.site ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vampire_Duchess · 2023-10-27 16:30 /r/crayiii this is the way 👆 homepage also has some widgets and information for several services like, jellyfin, AdguardHome, pihole, media center, arr services. uptime-kuma, internet speed, synology, etc. they also added a calendar and you can integrate container status. you can customize it for your family and friends ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdsmn21 · 2023-10-27 16:36 It doesn't need to be, but it's a hell of a lot easier if it is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CrispyBegs · 2023-10-27 17:42 https://gethomepage.dev/v0.7.4/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JoeB- · 2023-10-27 20:18 I use [Homepage](https://github.com/gethomepage/homepage). There are plenty of other options, but I prefer Homepage because of it's speed and simplicity. Many landing page apps allow for customizing on the page itself. No. It contains no running kernel, no init system, no system message buses, no device support, no host-level logging system.... It's just the set of standard base host tools built against isolated libraries. The image size is <10MB. Compare that to Raspbian, a minimal Linux OS, which is at least 3GB. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- am_kobold · 2023-10-28 08:54 > Abstraction from the OS, reducing risk of breakage during upgrades or distro changes It's an HTML file on a web server. What's gonna break? > Portability, allowing you to easily move the service to another host or to survive past rebuilds Same point as above. > Easier backups It's a single file. > Easier software upgrades Again, we're talking about a single file. There's nothing to upgrade. Your system upgrade isn't gonna break nginx/apache/caddy/lighty/whatever. > Durability/Verifiablity against modification (hacks/corruption) Again, single file. Put it on a R/O filesystem if you want, but Docker does not solve this problem at all > Isolation, reducing the chance that the service breaks from dependency changes on the host The only one I even partially agree with. Changes on the host, but again, what's gonna break? Single file. We are talking about this scenario, not Docker as a whole. I understand the value of Docker and use it myself when it makes sense. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- malastare- · 2023-10-28 12:03 Then the point is simply this: You're not suggesting a single HTML file, but a webserver serving a single html file. A nginx docker container with a config and content bind mount provides a self-contained, relocatable solution for that, and takes no more memory or disk storage than a OS-sourced installation. The points above still address that. Some points just provide virtually no value (as the dependencies are zero) The moment you try to get extra efficiency by using the server for additional things, those other parts start to take on (some) value. But the value may best be stated as this: Dockerization's value is best when applied as an overall system architecture, and the value for low-dependency services is simply in following the same structure, rather than directly benefiting from containerization.
