Use Vikunja for ToDos! reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jamesthethirteenth · 2023-10-27 10:05 Holy smokes, Vikunja is the best todo-app the world has ever seen. It's SO GOOD. It manages to be insanely powerful and have a LOT of features you normally need to buy some kind of super-enterprise-tier of a web app for, and it still doesn't feel bloated! I was never able to have a workable todo app because there were no categories, but now I run my entire life and family like a startup- need to get something organized- no problem, just create a shared project and that's that. It's like magic. I think it would be no problem to use it in a company as well. Thank you, Konrad!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NobodyRulesPenguins · 2023-10-27 11:09 Vikunja seem great yeah, I would have loved trying it more, everything inside looked excellent and to match my needs and wants! But I mostly work with subpath, and didn't want a vikunja.myhost.tld. And I tried, for more weeks that I should have. And my conclusion is that putting it in a subpath is a real pain, honestly, never really succeeded, rebuilding the frontend seem to be the only thing that have to be done, but nope. Never worked... I'll try it again someday maybe, but all theses webapp that want to be on top level only are a pain. I am not sure from when that did became the norme. But I miss the old times when it was a good practice to use relatives path everywhere to allow the application to be set anywhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- revereddesecration · 2023-10-27 11:40 But why are you so against using subdomains? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NobodyRulesPenguins · 2023-10-27 11:51 I use them if I have to. Recently I tried to set a docker registry in a subdirectory. That work great on the registry side! But either the podman or docker client dont know how to handle them, so I had to give up and make a subdomain. But ideally most of my services run under https://services.myhost.tld, from webmail, to cal/carddav, code-server, and a lot of other. I used to work with subdomain, but I find subdirectory more.. "clean". I admit it's just a matter of preference, but if I can stay with the same scheme for everything, that will be my goto. Also it's one dns entry to manage vs 20 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- revereddesecration · 2023-10-27 12:01 DNS isn’t difficult to manage though, you just use CNAMEs that point to the single A record. Regardless, you’re probably in the minority here, and I would argue that you’re doing it wrong and makings things more complicated than they need to be. You can even do a wildcard DNS entry and have your reverse proxy handle it all, very simple DNS setup. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NobodyRulesPenguins · 2023-10-27 12:08 I never said managing dns was hard, just that I prefered my way with subdirectory. And I totally agree about making things more complicated than they are for myself. But for me it's part of the fun in selfhosting, while I am doing it for myself it's more fun to try to bend the service to my wants with reverse proxying, url rewrite and the like if that succeed (sometime that does not). If I have to do it for more people I will work with it in the intended way, but I have all the time if not. For the minority I wonder, while searching for myself I see that there is a lot of people asking for the same, but I wonder how many are on reddit it's true. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blu5ky- · 2023-10-27 17:28 Be careful using subpath for different projects as it might have a big security side effect regarding securiry scope of cookies, localstorage, CORS, CSP ... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NobodyRulesPenguins · 2023-10-27 17:30 I do and will! Thanks for the reminder ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ivdda · 2023-10-27 22:35 I tried it out and the web app was great, but I reverted to Nextcloud. I use Thunderbird on Windows and Linux, and the Reminders app for iOS/iPadOS, but both integrations in Vikunja (or more specifically, in the underlying library they use for CalDAV) are currently broken. https://vikunja.io/docs/caldav/#not-working https://kolaente.dev/vikunja/api/issues/753 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-10-28 04:11 Yeah, this is the major bummer for me too. Been following the iOS bug for ages hoping for a fix ... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jamesthethirteenth · 2023-11-01 07:53 Try running Vikunja on localhost and then use an nginx reverse proxy configuration like so: `location /my-vikunja-subpath/ {` `proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:3456/;` `}` But if that doesn't work- I'd suggest not to use tools in a way they weren't designed for and just accept that some will run on a subdomain. I use subdomains for all my tools for that reason. Carlo
