Self hosted VOD server reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rshah212 · 2023-10-27 02:07 Hi self hosting community. I'm looking for recommendations for a VOD server, with some specific requirements: - Ability to browse a folder structure on the server to pick the file to view. If a file is added to a folder, the server shouldn't need to reindex - HLS support. - Adaptive bitrate on the fly transcoding would be great - Some level of password protection or user management Plex / Emby / Jellyfin are all good, but I find to be too bloated. I have toyed with nginx-vod using kaltura but it doesn't support on the fly transcoding to lower bitrates (files need to be pre- transcoded) Any thoughts from the community? Your help is much appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- plasticbomb1986 · 2023-10-27 05:36 So you want a filebrowser with transcode capability, am i right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- voxadam · 2023-10-27 05:53 Have you thought about a DLNA client/server combo? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rshah212 · 2023-10-27 10:14 Yes, that's pretty much it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rshah212 · 2023-10-27 10:16 So, my understanding (which could be wrong) is that DLNA servers do not have user mgmt or password protection. Am I incorrect? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- R0GG3R · 2023-10-27 18:17 [MistServer](https://mistserver.org/) maybe? Docker: https://github.com/R0GGER/mistserver ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rshah212 · 2023-10-28 00:10 I'm trying to figure out how to use it. Most of its documentation is now 404'd. Got any pointers on how to make it work as a VOD server? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- plasticbomb1986 · 2023-10-28 01:14 did you tried in jellyfin the folder view? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rshah212 · 2023-10-28 01:18 I have. The indexing takes forever and many times the app/web interface times out post indexing (for reasons I don't understand)
