Upgrading from pi 3b to pi 4 reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- storm4077 · 2023-10-26 23:38 I use owncloud and plex to host my own file server. I'm thinking of moving my work files and photos etc from Google cloud, to my own hosted server now. However, whenever I transfer files to the pi via owncloud, it is incredibly slow on my pi 3b. I wanted to ask, will the data transfer speed be noticeably faster if I upgrade to a pi 4? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- griphon31 · 2023-10-27 00:37 Generally I'd say if you are wanting to do backups etc, you want something that can hook up a couple drives in a raid and not rely on the flash on one of the pi's. Ufss PCs like a wyse 5070 are probably a safer option....that also not having great expansion options. A more standard sff can get a few 2.5" drives in would be even better and the sameish price as a pi if you go around 6th gen ---------------------------------------------------------------------- storm4077 · 2023-10-27 00:39 I'm looking for something with super low power consumption like the pi too. What's the idle power like on this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- griphon31 · 2023-10-27 00:40 Under 10 watts on mine. 20 at heavy heavy loads. It's a hair higher but you get so much more out of it it's worth it to me at least. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- storm4077 · 2023-10-27 00:44 Ah, see the pis idle at 3w max. Power consumption is a big factor for me. I need nextcloud to be fast enough that it's not unbearable, but not something that is going to consume too much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- griphon31 · 2023-10-27 00:47 Understood, just make sure you weigh against that the value of said files and the resilience of your pi before you cut google. You probably still want a cloud backup like backblaze or similar if you care about the data. But all data is if the same value, but I have some 30!gigs in triplicate at home and a copy encrypted in the cloud, and a few terabytes in a basic raid with no backups. I wasn't comfortable with my pi setup for my use case, but your situation is up to you if course ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bobbarker4444 · 2023-10-27 03:06 > I transfer files to the pi via owncloud, it is incredibly slow on my pi 3b Just guessing, are you using ethernet and does the Pi 3b have drives plugged in to USB? A big issue with the Pi 3b is that the ethernet and USB share a single channel, so if you're writing to a USB drive then you're bottlenecking your ethernet and vice versa. You could try using wifi instead of ethernet. I got some speedboosts in the past doing so. The answer your question though, the Pi 4 does remove this limitation so you should see much higher throughput than the 3b ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-27 10:05 But just basic power consumption is not directly what matters. Power efficiency is important. The Pi at 3W takes much longer to complete any tasks than a MiniPC/Thinclient would at 10W. (or whatever the equivalent in wattage for under load). A Pi will also limit you in the software you can run on it because its ARM platform versus typical x86_64.
