VPS with DNS API reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Beautiful-Log5632 · 2023-10-26 23:37 Do you know some VPS services that offer decent DNS with API to add and change DNS entries? Unfortunately most I found myself have no DNS and the ones who do don't have HTTP API to use it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-10-26 23:55 Uhm, what? Can you elaborate on what you mean? Do you want a DNS provider with API (almost everyone serious has that), or do you want a VPS provider who can let you provision services via API (again, most of the big pay-per-hour providers will let you do that) or do you want a VPS provider that *also* offers DNS (Vultr, DigitalOcean, etc) or do you want to know how to run your own DNS server with a HTTP API? If the latter, idk, look into CoreDNS. Maybe they have it. I have a classic BIND instance running and I just SSH over to the box to update the zonefiles manually. Or are you asking for 'failover IP' functionality? You need to be more specific. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Beautiful-Log5632 · 2023-10-27 00:16 > do you want a VPS provider that also offers DNS (Vultr, DigitalOcean, etc) This. VPS provider that offers DNS. But they let you configure DNS with an API not just in the website. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-10-27 00:18 I already mentioned DigitalOcean and Vultr, but also throw Hetzner into the mix. But the real question is: why? Why not use a third-party DNS provider like AWS, Google Cloud DNS, Azure DNS, CloudNS, etc? Why must it be integrated with your VPS provider? Sounds like XY Problem to me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Beautiful-Log5632 · 2023-10-27 00:45 Just for convenience to manage all in 1 place. I have not done it before. How do you connect the 3 things together properly (domain registrar, VPS, DNS)? Do you set the DNS settings with the domain registrar or DNS provider or both? And how does VPS get aware of it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcadianarcadian · 2023-10-27 09:05 Many of them offer DNS API. Cloudflare/Hetzner etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- denisgomesfranco · 2023-10-31 10:55 Cloudflare and Bunny offer free DNS hosting and APIs to manage it all, alongside with a GUI. You really won't find everything under the same provider.
