Most Australian financial institutions have horrible currency conversion fees, unless you have a platinum mastercard or Revolut. I tried signing up with Revolut, I even used the card number of my physical card (not the disposable or virtual cards they issue), but got knocked back. I don't get any specific errors, but I just cannot register. Support won't talk to me — I've tried direct email, facebook and Twitter, and they just ignore me like I don't exist. Well, guess GCP/AWS/M$FT are getting my money instead. I mean I am just speculating about the Revolut cards — maybe it is something else. But screw them. Speaking from personal experience. And at least imho no self-respecting organization or business would/should accept Revolut as a method of payment for a subscription model where the fee is not small and is a pay-per-use service (aka cloud) where the costs can get real big real fast. Because anyone can make a Revolut account still without any serious documentation that holds him/her liable in any way make a cloud account put that as payment spin up 90 huge servers and never pay or destroy the disposable card and disappear. I don't know how things are in Australia and how Revolut operates there but where I am Revolut only recently started (OPTIONALLY) asking for a tax number and tax residence and I am not even sure whether they ask just for the sake of it or if they'll actually utilize it if need be. And don't get me started on how easy it is to find and ID that's not even yours for the registration process. So to come back to the original point all major cloud providers would do well to not accept Revolut any time soon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-10-27 10:47 Funnily enough, I needed to provide much more documentation to sign up to Revolut than I needed to, for instance, PayPal. > (OPTIONALLY) asking for a tax number and tax residence Yeah nah in Australia it's asking for normal government documentation you use to sign up to any bank. Incidentally PayPal just asked me "Are you an Australian tax resident?" and that's it. No TFN, no passport. No nothing. At all. In fact, both Google Pay and PayPal are more than happy to accept Revolut cards. So is Amazon AWS. I think you're talking bollocks here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elementcodesnow · 2023-10-27 10:55 Try GCP. Which is the one I specifically focused on whereas for the rest I expressed a personal opinion that they shouldn't accept Revolut following GCPs example. If GCP allows you to use Revolut then I'll admit talking bollocks. And still in that case it will only be the fact that I haven't tried that again since three years ago when in fact GCP knocked me back for trying to use Revo. It will just be my outdated experience with it. So I still stand by my comment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-10-27 10:58 You may be right about GCP, and I am willing to concede that, but I am more specifically referring to the overall suggestion that (a) Revolut does not require documentation and that (b) therefore Revolut should not be accepted by Cloud Providers. The thing is, Revolut is just the first provider to issue temporary card numbers in much of the world, whereas I hear this is very common in America  —  you get that with privacy.com and most ordinary credit card issuers. Each country's KYC rules are different, so, honestly, maybe some countries require less stringent vetting then others, and it might make sense to not accept Revolut customers from those countries, but my experience has been that signing up to Revolut required the same documentation as signing up to any bank. If we assume that 'finding ID is not difficult' for the purposes of signing up to Rev, then we would have to assume the same is true for the rest of Australian banks and GCP/OCI should just not accept Australian payments at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elementcodesnow · 2023-10-27 11:08 But I was talking about my (third world) country my friend not Australia! In my country you can temporarily borrow an ID (I am flirting with a ban here perhaps but...) literally for the price of 20€, to conduct your..."business" and then return it. And that's all that Revolut asks for (again) in my country. Occasionally you may get a notification to input your tax residence and tax number and you dismiss it faster than "today's weather" from Google assistant. Tell me if you would trust 5 million people (that's roughly the amount I have calculated off the top of my head that are POTENTIALLY adept to use Revolut in the way I described) to pay in your business with Revolut. And that far-fetched example through the frame of my location is exactly where I'm coming from when I say that they should do well to not accept it. Because we are not all Australia and USA in this world! Some of us (myself included) wish we were! But sadly we are not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-10-27 11:19 Point taken, and I might have to retract some of my grouchiness: we are, after all, speaking from different experiential frames. In my case, I have gotten used to almost needing government ID to take a shit. But, may I ask, what is the situation with starting a conventual bank account (or getting prepaid debit cards) in your country? Can you also 'borrow' some ID for the purpose? So for instance in Australia, you can buy a prepaid debit card in store or online and have it shipped to 'totally' your address. In any event: I think the solution is not just blanket-banning Revolut or prepaid cards, but adding more considerations — such as issuing country — to your fraud heuristics. Or, do like some stores do, and outright say 'Please don't use temporary or prepaid cards' on the payment details page. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-27 11:27 None at all, just like i said, my only purpose is to annoy you. And its working great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DyceFreak · 2023-10-27 11:59 Shh, broke highschool children are learning here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DyceFreak · 2023-10-27 12:05 I think the irony of your statement is most people selfhosting are running 'free' software services anyways. Plex is more popular than Jellyfin, for example. The core idea is you are the master of your data and services, but only a small fraction of the people here truly live by that ideology by going full open. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dEnissay · 2023-10-27 12:05 Aha, so that free instance is fixed right. You won't go above it. So it remains free. But if you create a new one, then you'll have to pay right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elementcodesnow · 2023-10-27 12:31 For opening an account in a bank for the first time where I leave you have to physically go there (this has started to change now a bit with the digital revolution however) in person. Then of course you need an ID but it's not as simple to borrow anyone's in that scenario because you know they see you, the picture might not match or there may be an age difference - much more difficult when you're dealing with a real life suspicious person (that being the bank tailor). Then they additionally ask for an IRS clearance note (this is a direct translation from my language) but I am referring to a document you can print from the taxation portal which shows your last year income vs expenses and the taxes you've paid in between. This document also bears a bunch of your information. Then they require proof of residence (which comes in the form of an electric bill or phone bill under your name with your address on it). And a proof of phone number (for your mobile). And all those have to have some kind of linking with one another or if something does not, for example you rent a house and your proof of residence (aka electric bill) is under the name of the landlord for some reason who may or may not be related to you then you have to also provide a written affirmation by the individual for that fact. The same applies to your phone if you're like a student who is in a mobile family program and your mobile bill is under your parents name and not yours. And after all that you get your first bank account and you can usually get a debit card for that first account which is of type MasterCard (they used to also give VISAS but rarely now to debit cards for new accounts) shipped to your address. Any follow-up accounts in the same bank can be done via the app with only a request without much identification provided your details are up-to-date which is something they require you to do roughly once a year by visiting the bank in person again. And I've never had a problem with my bank's card and any cloud provider. However I also admit I have come a little strong about Revolut. For sure I don't mean to insinuate that it sucks. And God knows they have made strides towards a proper banking direction. Solving many of the everyday problems in fact. It's just that in countries like mine people take such a bad advantage of advancements like Revolut that I can see why big organizations will not easily trust them when it comes to large unpredictable charges. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mb4x4 · 2023-10-27 12:32 Upgrading the account removes the “guard rails” and allows you to use paid services just be sure not to exceed the free limits. Maybe scroll a bit further through my history if your time is worth so little and im confident you will find some that proves you wrong. Should we look at your history in this sub? You left a whopping 54 comments here over the last few months. How well were those received? Sadly i cant easily tell but i somehow doubt they are worth remembering. Looking at my own profile, i left 836 comments in this sub in the same time. And even tho karma is mostly meaningless on reddit, it can serve as a indicator of how much someone contributes to a subreddit, because someone who comments/posts a lot but its constant shit simply will not get much upvotes. So how come i have more than 10k karma in this sub alone here? Because i complain constantly and nothing else? How does that logic work? Do people upvote bullshit? So maybe you can learn to simply accept that your "Oracle just kicked me" post was not required, it happens.
