Remote desktop container on Kubernetes for development? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chachacha2347 · 2023-10-26 20:07 Hello all! I'm looking for a way to create a remote connection to a persistent container image which looks and feels like a full virtual machine. I've seen solutions like webtop and kasm, but as far as I can tell none of them work well on kubernetes and are substantially more than I need. Essentially I'm looking for a container + configuration I can put in version control and spin up as I need it. Primarily for development or light browsing/media consumption (not gaming). It can be accessible through RDP, or web browser it doesn't matter too much. Has anyone done this successfully? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joecool42069 · 2023-10-26 20:19 so a windows vm? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Reverent · 2023-10-26 22:23 Openvscode server and an oauth proxy tied to SSO. Or just openvscode server with a Uri secret, but if you're going that path then stick it behind a VPN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fluffer_Wuffer · 2023-10-26 22:45 Webtop can run on Kubernetes... I can share my deployment if you're interested, but it written specifically a k3s cluster, with an Intel GPU pass through to the containers (I do this anyway, for use with Plex and Jellyfin etc.. so adding Webtop was simply enough). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chachacha2347 · 2023-10-27 01:06 Oh nice! I haven't run across any configurations so seeing how you've got it setup would be awesome. I'm really just looking to avoid VMs entirely and get some sort of remote desktop set up that I can manage through gitops. Bonus if I can get a few different ones (<5) that I can use for different purposes. I don't have a GPU in my server though so hopefully that's not a dealbreaker. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chachacha2347 · 2023-10-27 01:06 No definitely not windows. Linux desktop of any flavor would be great! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chachacha2347 · 2023-10-27 01:07 I guess I'm looking for more of a persistent dev environment with more than just VS code, but this looks cool! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chachacha2347 · 2023-10-27 01:08 Also can you add persistent data to it somehow (e.g. dotfiles, etc) or run other docker containers in it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dysguak · 2023-10-27 02:24 This looks like a geek's paradise! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seidler2547 · 2023-10-27 06:02 I use Xpra-HTML5 docker containers to host applications that don't have a web interface. Works pretty well although I think all the existing docker images for it are broken and you need to roll your own. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcadianarcadian · 2023-10-27 09:08 Webtop ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chachacha2347 · 2023-10-27 14:06 Like this? https://github.com/ffeldhaus/docker-xpra-html5-minimal ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chachacha2347 · 2023-10-27 14:33 Apparently you can run kasm containers directly on kubernetes with a few tweaks shown here: https://github.com/kasmtech/workspaces-images/issues/70 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seidler2547 · 2023-10-27 14:41 Yeah I used that as a base but the keys for the apt repo have expired I think. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seidler2547 · 2023-10-27 14:49 So as a starting point you could try this, which i just cobbled together because I didn't have time to do it properly: https://gist.github.com/seidler2547/953b1f1243483fe66c1f62a0c438104e
