Cheapest VPS to get started with reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Beautiful-Log5632 · 2023-10-26 19:45 For someone new to self hosting can you recommend cheap VPS to try simple things with? Can pay by hour like some cloud servers let you do or pay full month in advance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You_Wen_AzzHu · 2023-10-26 19:48 Your home PC is the cheapest. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ArionnGG · 2023-10-26 20:00 Try ARM architecture from Hetzner. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gioco_chess_al_cess · 2023-10-26 20:08 All the major cloud providers (Google, AWS, Azure and Oracle) have a more or less generous free trial. You can't get cheaper than free. That's how I began. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- usrdef · 2023-10-26 20:11 If you're playing around with something, then just setup a spare machine or a virtual machine to play with. I use a VPS at a datacenter because I have backups done every day, and I am not relying on all my hardware being in the same house in case something happens. $14/mo gives me 6 cores, 16GB memory, 400GB SSD. And for $22 I can double all that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KrazyKirby99999 · 2023-10-26 20:16 Linode, Vultr, Digital Ocean. Hetzner is probably the best from more or less reputable providers. There are some cheaper ones or sweet promo deals, thought ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulEngineer-89 · 2023-10-26 22:17 Fly.IO gives you 3 VPSs for free and doesn’t randomly delete them but the free ones are VPS or ipV6 only. That’s not a problem for your use case. A static ipv4 IP is $2/month. IONOS is your next cheapest at $3 then Digital Ocean at $5. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- boli99 · 2023-10-26 22:19 get a free ARM vps from Oracle on their free tier. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulEngineer-89 · 2023-10-26 22:20 They are free for a limited time, then tons of hidden/gotcha charges. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DoTheThingNow · 2023-10-26 22:32 Ethernetservers.com gives you a few very cheap options for just a few dollars a month (although you have to pay in 3 Month chunks). So you need very little. Think what you need to run Docker and a few containers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulEngineer-89 · 2023-10-27 00:25 Those are interesting but what’s not obvious to me, are those regular rates or teaser rates? I mean a static ip costs roughly $0.69/month from what I’ve read. OVH has a $1 vps trial for 12months that's good to play around with, you can install any OS including custom images. It uses older hardware but it's perfectly fine to get started. I host long running web socket processes on it. For front end static react/javascript based websites i use cloudflare, vercel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saboral · 2023-10-27 03:05 I’ve been happy with VPSDime and InterServer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eric0e · 2023-10-27 03:42 I have several low-cost cloud VPS, all claiming that they will not raise the rate, and so far the rates have stayed the same. I don't know how they do it, and I really don't care. All the systems I am using came with 1 static IPv4 address. A couple also came with IPv6 addresses which I have not setup. One bills me $1/mo, and gives me a 1Gb network interface with unmetered traffic. I have been running more then 5TB/mo through it, for months now, without any complaints. Best non-oracle deal I grabbed was a 2 core AMD64, 3GB RAM and 25GB SSD VPS for $13.69/year. I am running a remote Debian desktop on it and using it as a VPN server. They said they will never raise the renewal rate, but they did limited it to 1 VPS per-person, and said it was a one time offer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Itchy_One_ · 2023-10-27 03:50 Hetzner or Netcup or Contabo. Maybe OP is a student and could have Azure VPS without even a credit card, hard to get a hidden/gotcha cost in that case. I have also had a very positive experience with Google and Oracle. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- prisukamas · 2023-10-27 05:49 Check lowendtalk.com for cheap VPS offerings.
