How exactly do is use ipv6 to reach my Jellyfin Server reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eisdaemon01 · 2023-10-25 19:11 I recently got a small pc for my Jellyfin Server. Ideally, I want to reach it from everywhere, but alas, I got no static Ipv4 Address with which I am more familiar. Can I just expose my Ipv6 Address through that damned Vodafone and use the IP Address together with the Port, or do I need an DNS with AAAA record? And are there any pitfalls I need to take care of? I am definitely not the most experienced Dude when it comes to these things, so I would appreciate it if you could hold my hand here a little bit :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paolocampi · 2023-10-25 19:20 Vodafone wirh IPv6? Here in Italy I've got ipv4 Maybe can you use ddns as no-ip or duckdns I'm using both on mu Linux Mint 21 with mu Jellyfin (with caddy reverse proxy for automatic sal on server) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- certuna · 2023-10-25 19:51 You can use it directly (open the port in the firewall towards the global IPv6 address), DNS with an AAAA record is optional, but a lot easier to type in on your clients. Like with IPv4, you can put a reverse proxy in between Jellyfin and the clients if you want https and/or more auth/filtering options. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bhthllj · 2023-10-26 02:45 I am a Vodafone customer in Germany and I’ve tried many approaches. Trying to use IPv6 only didn’t work for me for two reasons: 1) I am frequently in networks that are IPv4 only, thus address resolution fails 2) Vodafone updates my network’s IPv6 address regularly and I didn’t want to mess with those setting, admittedly for a lack of knowledge about IPv6. So I’ve bought an inexpensive VPS (1 € / month) that works with both stacks and gave it a DDNS name and reverse-ssh’d from my jellyfin server to the VPS node using autossh in the crontab. You could create a service on the jf server as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Adam_Meshnet · 2023-10-26 08:56 If you already have a dedicated device set up with Jellyfin you can skip reverse proxies, dynamic DNSes, and port-forwarding all together with Meshnet. Here is a documentation that goes into detail on how to set everything up: https://meshnet.nordvpn.com/how-to/remote-files- media-access/access-jellyfin-media-sever-remotely ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dagger0 · 2023-10-26 11:24 Note you don't need the reverse ssh forwarding, you can just reverse proxy onto the server's v6 address over the Internet. If your prefix is dynamic then that does mean using DDNS, but apparently you're already using it anyway. This does assume there's no uncontrollable ISP firewall preventing inbound connections. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bhthllj · 2023-10-26 11:29 It was the easiest approach while also encrypting traffic. I happen to have a static dns entry on my vps and thus don’t need a DDNS service. And I don’t have to bother with IPv6 address shenanigans I might cause. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gel0_F · 2023-10-26 11:48 What about Tailscale? I understand that it works with Dynamic IPs.
