ELI5 AppRise reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BlackAndBlue1908 · 2023-10-24 15:47 Can someone help me understand why I would want to go through all the trouble of setting up AppRise rather than just using individual notifications from the apps that I use? I see a ton of people saying they are using it and can't understand the benefit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-24 15:51 Apprise isnt exactly aimed at you as a user, but more at someone who makes their own project. For example you make a tool that notifies a user about available updates of Docker container images. Users want you to include email notfiications, and Pushover, and Pushbullet, and so many more. Instead of you manually adding each platform as its own, which takes a long time, you can simply add support for Apprise. And Apprise covers all those platforms already for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MeudA67 · 2023-10-24 20:48 I personally love when developers include the apprise-api directly within their project... For example, as you mentioned, ABS & Radarr need us to run a separate Apprise server (apprise-api), which isn't really straight forward. On the other end, Bazaar (subtitles) and Ouroboros (docker container auto update) have the apprise-api included, and only need the Apprise formated URL to notify services, which is super convenient. In my specific case, plugging matrix://user:pass@hostname:port/!room\_id will post messages in my Matrix server without needing the full blown apprise-api in between. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-24 20:51 Of course its neat when Apprise gets built into a software, but i would assume that the main reason not everyone does it is simply size of it. Look how large apprise by itself is, even if some parts of that arent required it still leaves a good chunk gets added to the software. Plus other reasons provably like ease of maintenance etc.
