Question about domain expiry and transfer reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exhibit304 · 2023-10-24 05:36 Hey all I have a domain expiring on 26th of this month with namesilo. I'm in process of transferring over to spaceship for cheapest com prices. However apparently this won't be done until 28th now. Do I also need to renew on namesilo or is this all good? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jusepal · 2023-10-24 05:48 Domain transfer is usually instantaneous nowadays, but it depends on tld and depends on both registrar; the donor and the receiver end. That being said, shouldn't waited literally 2 days before expiring to initiate the transfer. Most people do it around 2 weeks before expiring to initiate transfer because it can take up to a week to complete. In case of failure it'll usually will stay with the donor registar but for extreme case like yours idk, maybe it'll just stay in limbo and expire in the process. Never wait for last minute again, really. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-24 06:29 **This**, and don’t just look for price but convenience too. Pick someone with easy automated payments and domain security (like hiding your personal data). The margins on domain names are razor thin, you will only save a few $/year by always picking the cheapest one out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Todd1561 · 2023-10-24 08:52 Just for future reference, there’s no need to wait until expiration to move to a new registrar. The new registrar is required to honor the time left on your current registration. I’ve moved domains with years left and no issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Crypto_Cadet · 2023-10-26 05:43 Spaceship may be the cheapest but ask yourself how reliable they are. A relatively new/unknown registrar (yeah I know, Namecheap)- will they be around long-term?
