Eg. for searching years of emails through a mobile phone. I've got pretty close to that goal, like I've got a fully searchable dovecot setup with fts-xapian, which hosts an archive of 28 years of emails, a postfix configured for my own LAN only, and a mix of offlineimap and imapfilter for snooping emails from my ISP mail server and archiving them in the correct place. But it's not the real thing. Being a true internet mail server admin is a full time job; and it can't be really done on a home ISP connection with dynamic IP and no access to reverse DNS. Maybe one could go for a hybrid solution with a rented VPS, setting up a mail gateway on the VPS which your own mail server can VPN into. I find OSM coverage in Poland insanely good. On long journeys (at least outside of the city) I started using Osmand\~ for navigation as it's much more predictable (plus it's actually pretty fast nowadays and routes nicely). In Poland gmaps is cool for traffic info, rough business opening hours and maybe reviews. Actual navigation is extremely unpredictable. The map itself is often wrong, very little details and tends to have issues with being up to date (full streets missing for years, wrong addresses). It also routers through closed areas, sidewalks and parks, if an Uber delivery guy used a moped ONCE on that route. **Check out** [**https://protomaps.com/**](https://protomaps.com/) (a lot of cool advice here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37982621) . The data is so bad that trying to start feels like dripping water on a hot stone. I experienced both, in Germany, OSM data is often better than what Google has. In South Africa, the OSM data was often a decade old. As I live in Germany, OSM would be good enough if there was a single Android app that had a good search feature. I do use my server to manage the syncing of those notes (selectively) to ask devices and manage backups and version control. And because the files are markdown if anything goes wrong with Obsidian client or their company you can move to a different markdown client pretty easily. Shinobi is frustrating in it's own right, but it does have many features and delivers as a product overall. ___ For a doorbell camera, the Reolink Doorbell Camera is one of the better ONVIF Profile T supporting 2 way audio cameras out there right now. That's the key standard that you want to look for here. Go2rtc is the best tool at the moment for accessing the two way audio on your camera without using proprietary software. Unfortunately the developer of it is kind of a moron in a sense and doesn't understand some common use cases, so 2 way audio isn't possible behind a reverse proxy, you'll have to use a VPN off your local network. You could also move to a business plan, depending on how pricing goes for your region. I'd recommend getting OPNSense infront of your home network. You can run it on an old bit of kit with a PCIE NIC (optiplex + Gb NIC \~ $200). That will give you good control over your routing and firewalling as well as some other goodies. If you get a VPS or deploy your own bare metal then you can just ipsec or Wireguard the remote device into your home and cordon it off using the firewall. That would let you deploy a mail gateway while keeping your homes edge MTA from having to be exposed to the public internet directly. Your mail gateway would buffer emails and deliver it back home via the link. That's personally how I'm going to be handling it once my new kit arrives. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DIYSRE · 2023-10-25 01:47 I've thought about this a bit. People have said that OneNote replication would be difficult but I kind-of disagree. You'd just need to have a functional frontend over an SVG file. Each notebook could be a folder, each textbox could be a markdown file, and all the drawings could be SVG. That would give an infinite whiteboard to draw on with the ability to drop notes where-ever you want on it. The entire thing would be ultra portable and editable because SVG's are pretty standard these days. If Markdown files are get baked into the SVG then it's ultra cross compatible. It could be baked via an export or automatically on save. The markdown files would just be there for added cross portability. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elbalaa · 2023-10-25 01:48 CloudFlare Argo Tunnels or Tailscale Funnels. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DIYSRE · 2023-10-25 01:59 it's worth noting with VC software: Discord and TS have connection limits that become a problem when you have a party of hundreds or thousands of people.
