The work that goes onto creating selfhosted software. Insights onto my selfhosted journey reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mickael-kerjean · 2023-10-22 14:05 Not sure if that's of any interest to anyone but there's a lot of hidden stuff that happen when I started the journey in creating a selfhosted Dropbox alternative back in 2017 as I wasn't happy with state of the ecosystem. To put in bluntly I figured the best path for a good Dropbox alternative was to follow the unix philosophy and use the right tool for the right job where Dropbox is made of 3 tools: \- storage: sftp server, ftp server, webdav server, there's sooo many servers available, it would be dumb to reinvent a worse wheel \- sync: syncthing, unison for 2 way sync if that's needed, rsync for one way sync, .... \- a UI: well there was nothing that could make a nice enough job so I made it happen Once that's said, it become obvious one can do a lot if you just focus on the UI bit and the idea was to share all those stuff in the open starting from somewhere ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isleepbad · 2023-10-22 22:34 Nice read. I'm also developing my own app and am also using streaming. Can't wait to see your article on that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mickael-kerjean · 2023-10-23 10:03 will post an update here then! Good to see some other people building selfhosted software that don't shove everything in memory :)
